Thin-Wall Part Holding Fixture with Contoured Pockets for 0.01mm Repeatability and Thin-Wall Support in Aerospace Components
Thin-Wall Holding Fixture
,Contoured Pocket Machining
,0.01mm Clamp Repeatability
Support, do not crush. Contoured pockets machined to 0.02 mm of the part model, 0.01 mm clamp repeatability, and 0.3–0.5 mm relief on all non-contact surfaces.
Thin-wall aerospace parts fail in two places: in the machine, when the fixture squeezes them out of round, and after the machine, when the clamps come off and the part springs back. This fixture is designed to avoid both. The pocket is machined from the part model with a 0.3 to 0.5 mm relief on every surface that does not need to touch, so the part rests on a controlled set of pads instead of being forced into a full-form cavity.
The contact pads are machined coplanar to 0.02 mm, and the pocket depth is held to 0.01 mm so the part sits at the same height every load. Clamping is applied over the pads, not over the wall, which is what keeps a 1.2 mm wall from collapsing under clamp pressure. Repeatability after repeated loading is 0.01 mm.
- Model review. We take your STEP model or scan, identify the support points, and confirm where relief is needed before any material is cut.
- Material selection. 6061-T6 for general work, 7075-T6 where the fixture itself must resist wear; plate is verified against the mill certificate.
- Stress relief and base facing. The blank is stress relieved and the base faced flat to 0.01 mm, establishing the reference for pocket depth.
- 3D roughing. Pockets are roughed with a 0.5 mm allowance using a constant-stepover path, keeping cutter load even around the contour.
- Contour finishing. The pocket is finished to 0.02 mm of the model with a ball-nose cutter, then the contact pads are faced in a separate pass so they are truly coplanar.
- Relief machining. Non-contact surfaces are cut back by 0.3 to 0.5 mm, leaving clearance for part tolerances and for chips.
- Clamp features and finishing. Clamp holes, slots and threads are added, then hard anodizing is applied with contact pads masked or left to a compliant coating.
- Verification. CMM or 3D scan compared against the part model, pad coplanarity checked, then a load and unload trial to confirm repeatability before shipment.

A full-form pocket looks like the safest way to hold a thin-wall part, but it is not: if the pocket is 0.03 mm tight the part is pressed into shape and springs back when released, and if it is 0.03 mm loose the part moves under cutting load. The practical answer is a relieved pocket with defined pads. The part touches the fixture only where it is stiff, clamps bear on those same pads, and the wall is left free. We also check the fixture by loading and unloading a sample part three times and measuring the same feature each time; 0.01 mm spread is the pass mark.
Pocket geometry, pad layout, relief depth, clamp type, base size and coating are all made to your model. One fixture is a normal order with no tooling charge and no setup fee, and the prototype follows the same scan verification as a batch. If the model shows a wall that cannot survive the planned clamp force, our engineer says so in a DFM note before machining.
- NDA before models. Mutual non-disclosure is signed before models, drawings or samples are released.
- No reference use. Confidential fixtures and customer part shapes never appear in samples, catalogues or website photos.
- Separated cell. Sensitive work runs with named operators and project-coded programmes.
- Data control. Models stay on an access-controlled server; finishing partners receive specifications only.
Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has been machining custom parts since 2008. The plant runs four-axis and five-axis machining centres, turn-mill lathes, CNC lathes and milling machines, employs 90 to 102 people and works to ISO 9001:2015. More than 200 customers are served, 50 to 60 percent of output is exported, and annual sales are between USD 10 million and 20 million.
- Confirmed dates. Prototypes 5 to 8 working days, batch orders 15 to 25 working days after drawing approval.
- Repeat orders skip setup. Programmes, fixtures and scan programs stay on file.
- Reserved slots. Blanket orders are booked into fixed monthly machine time.
- Early warning. If material, anodizing or verification threatens the date, you hear it before the date is missed.
- Dispatch evidence. Photos, inspection report and packing list before shipment.

Each fixture is bagged with desiccant, separated by foam so pocket walls and pads cannot be bruised, and packed in a five-layer export carton with the part number, quantity and batch code. Sea freight ships on fumigation-free plywood pallets; neutral cartons are available.
From the part tolerance. We leave 0.3 to 0.5 mm on non-contact surfaces, which covers the part tolerance band and still gives chip clearance without letting the part rock.
We scan the sample, build the pocket from the scan, and note where the scan is uncertain so you can confirm before machining.
Yes. We can add vacuum ports and a seal groove to the base so the fixture is held without clamps, which is often better for thin walls.
Yes, before models are released, and confidential parts are excluded from samples and photos.
