,Custom Titanium Impeller Hub
This impeller hub is machined as one integral piece in TC4 titanium, with the blades and the outer shroud ring cut from the same blank instead of being welded or riveted together. Twelve backward-curved blades are generated simultaneously on a 5-axis machining center, each blade root blended into the hub with a controlled fillet, and the shroud ring stays attached through the whole machining sequence. The result is a shrouded rotor for aircraft casing assemblies, air cycle machine compressors, auxiliary power unit blowers and high-speed centrifugal stages, where the blade passage, the hub-to-shaft fit and the running balance all have to hold at temperature and at speed rather than only on the bench.
The process route below is what governs whether a shrouded impeller comes out right. Thin blade walls and an integral ring make clamping and heat the two main risks, so each step is planned around them.
| Step | Operation and control point |
|---|---|
| 1. Billet and verification | TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) forged bar or plate, cut oversize, ultrasonic and hardness check with mill certificate traced to the heat number. |
| 2. Pre-machining stress relief | Blank roughed and stress relieved before blade finishing, so blade tip clearances do not move when the ring is released. |
| 3. Hub datum preparation | Center bore and the mounting face turned and ground first; these become the only datum for all later 5-axis work. |
| 4. 5-axis simultaneous blade milling | Twisted blades cut with tapered ball and barrel tools, tool axis continuously tilted to hold the blade pressure surface within 0.01mm of the CAD model. |
| 5. Blade root fillet and shroud junction | Root fillets and the blade-to-shroud junction finished in the same clamping so the fillet radius is continuous and free of steps. |
| 6. Flow passage finishing | Passage surfaces hand-blended and polished to Ra 0.4-0.8um, leading edges checked for a uniform radius. |
| 7. Bore, spline and bolt circle | Center bore bored and honed to H6, keyway or spline cut, tie-bolt holes drilled and reamed on the same datum, position within 0.02mm. |
| 8. Dynamic balancing | Rotor balanced to G2.5 at operating speed by removing material at the hub rim, correction recorded on the balancing report. |
| 9. Surface treatment and NDT | Bead blast, anodizing or dry film lubrication as required; dye penetrant inspection on blade roots on request. |
| 10. Final inspection | CMM blade profile scan against the point cloud, bore cylindricity, runout, balance report and material certificate shipped with the lot. |
| Blade profile deviation | 0.005-0.01mm against the CAD surface, checked by CMM scan |
| Blade angle and twist | +/-0.1 degree |
| Center bore | H6, cylindricity 0.005mm, roundness 0.003mm |
| Hub-to-shaft runout | 0.01mm TIR |
| Blade tip clearance to shroud | 0.03mm uniform, +/-0.01mm variation |
| Blade root fillet | Radius tolerance +/-0.05mm, no undercut or step |
| Bolt circle and tie-bolt holes | Position 0.02mm, hole diameter H7 |
| Mounting face flatness | 0.01mm |
| Residual unbalance | G2.5 at operating speed, report per rotor |
| Surface roughness | Flow passages Ra 0.4-0.8um, bore Ra 0.2um |
Titanium moves under cutter load and does not conduct heat away quickly, so blade walls are finished with light radial engagements, fresh tooling and coolant through the spindle. Every rotor is scanned on the CMM rather than spot-checked, because a twisted blade that is out of profile shows up in efficiency and in vibration, not in a caliper reading.
The impeller is built to your aerodynamic or hydraulic design, not adapted from a catalogue pattern.
- Blade count from 6 to 22, with splitter blades, swept or radial blades, and custom twist distribution.
- Shrouded or open rotor construction, with the shroud ring integral, bolted or omitted as your design requires.
- Hub bore, keyway, spline or taper lock to your shaft interface; bore diameter from 5mm to 120mm.
- Material by application: TC4 titanium for temperature and strength, 7075-T6 for high-speed aluminium rotors, 17-4PH stainless for corrosive duty, Inconel on request.
- Trim diameter, blade height, tip clearance and bolt circle position adjustable without new tooling.
- Interface features: tie-bolt holes, dowel holes, clamping flange, balance land, locking groove, part marking.
- Prototype quantities from 1 piece, with the same program carried into batch production.
We work from a STEP model, a 2D drawing or a scanned sample. If the blade geometry cannot be machined as drawn, our engineering team returns a manufacturability note with the specific change and its effect on performance before you commit to a quote.
Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd is a custom CNC machining supplier established in 2008 in Dongguan, Guangdong, China. The shop runs 4-axis and 5-axis CNC machining centers, turn-mill combined lathes and CNC lathes with roughly 100 staff, including dedicated programming and quality teams. More than 200 customers are served in medical equipment, robotics, automotive, aerospace, automation, laser, LED, lithium battery and precision testing instruments, with 50-60 percent of output exported. The company is ISO 9001:2015 certified, holds annual sales in the USD 10-20 million range, and inspects in house with CMM and optical measurement equipment. Impellers, integral shrouded rotors and thin-wall rotating parts are a long-standing speciality, supported by the same 5-axis capability used for vacuum, optical and fluid handling components.
- Monthly capacity above 10,000 pieces across the rotating parts family, with capacity reserved for repeat programmes.
- Typical lead time: 3-7 days for prototypes, 7-14 days for 10-100 pieces, 14-30 days for mass production.
- Programs, fixtures, probe routines and the approved sample are archived against your part number, so a repeat lot starts without re-programming.
- Balancing and CMM reports travel with every lot, keeping your incoming inspection short.
- Rush service and scheduled release shipments for projects with a fixed line-side date.
- Export packaging: individual foam cradle with blade protection, desiccant, master carton, palletized for LCL and FCL.
Aircraft casing and air cycle machine rotors, auxiliary power unit blowers, turbocharger and e-charger compressor wheels, centrifugal pump and compressor impellers, high-speed blower rotors, marine water-jet and propulsion components, HVAC fan rotors, dental and medical turbine rotors, and custom non-standard rotating parts built to customer design.
Why machine the shroud ring integral instead of welding it on?
An integral shroud keeps the blade-to-shroud junction continuous, removes weld distortion and post-weld straightening, and holds tip clearance to 0.03mm with +/-0.01mm variation. It also eliminates a weld inspection step and the risk of a fatigue initiation site at the joint, which matters on a part running at speed.
How do you hold blade profile accuracy in titanium?
Blades are finished with light radial cuts using tapered ball or barrel tools, tool paths generated from the CAD surface with continuous 5-axis tilting, and coolant through the spindle to control heat. Every rotor is then CMM scanned against the model and the deviation map is shipped with the part; typical profile deviation is 0.005-0.01mm.
Can you make a non-standard impeller from my own design?
Yes, that is the normal case. Send a STEP model or drawing with blade count, hub bore and interface details, and we return a manufacturability review plus a quote in one to two working days. Prototypes run from one piece, and the same program is reused for batches so the approved sample matches production.
Is dynamic balancing included?
Yes. Each rotor is balanced to G2.5 at operating speed after machining and before finishing, with correction at the hub rim. The balancing report with residual unbalance value and correction position is supplied with the inspection report.
What keeps repeat orders on schedule?
Programs, fixtures, probe routines and the approved first article are archived against your part number, and repeat lots are booked against reserved capacity above 10,000 pieces per month. With CMM and balancing reports attached per lot, both timing and quality stay repeatable between shipments.
