7075 Alloy CNC Machining Waist Yaw Joint Housing for Humanoid Robot with 0.01mm Bore Precision
Waist Yaw Joint Housing
,7075 Thin Ring 4mm
,0.01mm Coaxial Bearing Seats
The waist yaw joint is the stiffness bottleneck of the entire humanoid robot structure. It must maintain coaxiality of two bearing seats on a 120 mm diameter thin-walled ring, while also holding face runout of the reducer interface and perpendicularity of the motor mount. 7075-T6 allows us to reduce wall thickness to 4 mm without sacrificing stiffness — at the cost of deformation control that must be precise at every process step: rough machining, stress relief, semi-finishing, fine boring, and re-inspection. Not one step can be skipped.
Arm joint housings are typically 60–90 mm, while waist housing bearing seats often exceed 120 mm in diameter. Scaling up introduces three non-linear challenges:
- Ovalization of the thin-walled ring — For a ring with 120 mm diameter and 4 mm wall thickness, even slight improper clamping force can press it into an oval. We use soft jaws, uniform clamping, and micro-cutting to achieve 0.01 mm roundness after finishing.
- Timing of stress relief — 7075 thick plate carries significant internal residual stress; after removing the surface layer, the ring will slowly ovalize. We perform stress relief twice — after rough machining and after semi-finishing — and after 72 hours of resting, the finished part still measures stable at 0.01 mm.
- Multi-interface single-setup forming — Upper and lower bearing seats, reducer flange face, motor mount, and cable routing cavity all reside on the same housing. A unified datum must be established within one or two setups; splicing through secondary setups will inevitably accumulate errors.
- Weight sensitivity — Every 1 kg reduced above the waist benefits the entire robot's center of gravity and endurance. Weight-reduction cavities must be arranged along load paths while maintaining circumferential stiffness.

- 01 Structure & Tolerance Chain Review Confirm bearing model, reducer interface, motor mount position, and cable routing path; assess clamping and deformation risks of the thin-walled ring.
- 02 Material & Flaw Detection 7075-T6 thick plate received by heat number with 3.1 material certificate; ultrasonic sampling on thick sections to exclude lamination and inclusions.
- 03 Rough Milling & Rough Boring Rough mill outer profile and weight-reduction cavities; rough bore upper and lower bearing seats with 1.0 mm allowance per side, symmetric material removal.
- 04 First Stress Relief Low-temperature stress relief to release residual stress in the plate — this step determines whether a large-diameter thin-walled part will ovalize two weeks later.
- 05 Semi-Finishing & Datum Establishment Using the flange face as datum, semi-finish mill the ring body, flange face, and motor mount face; inspect roundness and runout trends.
- 06 Second Stress Relief Perform stress relief again after semi-finishing to stabilize dimensions before entering final machining.
- 07 Fine Boring of Dual Bearing Seats Fine bore upper and lower H7 bearing seats in a single setup, coaxiality 0.01 mm, roundness 0.01 mm; then fine mill flange face to 0.01 mm face runout.
- 08 Hole System & Cable Routing Cavity Drill and ream locating pin holes, tap motor mount threads; mill cable routing cavity with R3+ fillets and polish.
- 09 Surface Treatment & Inspection Hard anodizing with mating surfaces masked; CMM inspection of coaxiality, roundness, and runout; re-measure critical dimensions after 72 hours of resting.

Bearing, reducer, and motor combinations for waist joints vary greatly between manufacturers — the housing must be built to match the interface.
- Bearing matching — Crossed roller bearings, thin-section bearings, harmonic reducer integrated bearings; custom bore diameter, shoulder, and preload face per your selection.
- Interface customization — Reducer flange hole pattern, motor mount PCD, encoder mounting position matched to drawings.
- Stiffness optimization — Ring wall thickness and rib orientation adjustable per robot mass and torsional stiffness targets, with weight-stiffness comparison proposals.
- Cable routing design — Internal channels designed per harness and air tube routing, with wall-penetration sleeves and fixation points reserved.
- Iteration support — Starting from 1 pc, 2–3 rounds of structural iteration based on prototype assembly feedback, with version traceability.
Humanoid robot assembly drawings are often the core competitiveness of the next-generation model. We implement dual physical and data isolation per project.
- NDA first — Bilateral confidentiality and non-circumvention agreement signed before receiving drawings.
- Dedicated secure area — Dedicated machines and personnel; no photography, no mobile phones allowed inside.
- No display — Drawings, part photos, and customer logos never enter sample cabinets, catalogs, websites, or social media.
- Data isolation — Programs and models stored on permission-controlled servers; can be destroyed with records upon project completion.
- Code naming — Traveler cards and packaging labels use internal codes instead of customer part numbers.
- Version management — Each revision archived separately; old programs and models destroyed per agreement with records issued.
Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd. was founded in 2008, with 90–102 employees, serving 200+ customers, export share 50–60%, annual sales USD 10–20 million, ISO 9001:2015 certified.
Large-diameter thin-walled ring parts are the work we most welcome — the reason is simple: machine precision is not the hard part. What is hard is the sequence of "rough first, finish later, double stress relief, soft-jaw uniform clamping," and the patience to reserve an extra 72 hours for dimensional stability re-measurement for our customers.
