Heavy Duty Automation Base Plate Custom CNC Machining 0.01mm Tolerance 6061
Heavy Duty Automation Base Plate

,Dowel Hole Base Plate
An automation base plate is the reference everything else is measured from. Rails, actuators, gearboxes, sensors and fixtures all locate to it, so a few hundredths of a millimetre of error at the plate becomes visible play at the end of a gantry. Most field problems with base plates are not machining defects in the ordinary sense — they are missing process decisions: holes drilled without a stable datum, faces finished before the part relaxed, or batches that drifted because the process was never locked. Our CNC machining parts factory builds these parts around rigidity, position accuracy and repeatability.
Three failure patterns dominate:
- Flatness loss after machining — preloads the frame and shows up as vibration or uneven wear on rails.
- Dowel hole position error — forces assembly staff to ream or hammer parts into place and destroys the intended locating scheme.
- Batch-to-batch variation — the second order no longer matches the first, so spare modules stop being interchangeable.
All three are process problems, and all three are preventable at the planning stage.
Base plates are usually designed with ribs, pockets and stepped sections to save weight without losing stiffness. Machining those features asymmetrically can pull the plate out of flat, so we balance stock removal across faces and rough before finishing. Where a plate is thin relative to its span, we plan support during machining so the part is not machined in a deflected state. Pocket floors are controlled for thickness consistency, because an uneven floor is an uneven stiffness map.
Dowel holes and rail mounting holes are the functional heart of the part. They are machined in the same set-up as the reference face wherever possible, and their position, diameter and perpendicularity are inspected as a group. Threaded holes are checked for depth and squareness so fasteners seat fully. Where linear rails mount, the parallelism of the mounting surfaces and the straightness of the reference edge matter as much as hole position — a rail bolted to a twisted surface will bind over its travel.
Stepped slots, cable passages and clearance cut-outs are often where drawings are least precise and cost is highest. We review corner radii against available tooling, propose changes where a radius is costing money for no functional gain, and machine edges so there is no burr left for assembly staff to deal with. Deburring and chamfer control are part of the process, not an afterthought.
We hold ±0.01 mm on production work and agree flatness and parallelism requirements at quotation. Reference faces are finished last, after the features that release stress, and verified on the surface plate. The practical test is simple: does the assembly bolt together without shimming, and does it still move freely after torque is applied? That is what the inspection plan is designed to guarantee.
Repeatability comes from documentation, not memory. Fixtures are numbered and stored, programs are version-controlled against the drawing revision, tool lists are fixed, and inspection results are recorded per batch. When a customer orders the same base plate six months later, the route is retrieved rather than rebuilt. That is also how we protect delivery dates: known cycle times, known fixturing and reserved capacity for repeat programs.
| Primary Aluminum Grades | 6061 and 7075 aluminum plate for most automation structures |
|---|---|
| Alternative Materials | Steel and stainless options where wear resistance or magnetic requirements demand it |
| Finishing Options | Clear or black anodizing, hard anodizing for wear surfaces, bead blasting, chem-film, and laser marking for part and revision identification |
We manufacture high-precision machined parts for industrial buyers, with a process built around predictability: drawing breakdown, process planning, first-article approval, then batch production with inspection recorded against the drawing revision. Our platforms cover 3-axis and 5-axis milling plus turning, with a working tolerance of ±0.01 mm, and we handle anodizing, plating, passivation, laser marking and light assembly through qualified partners. Repeat customers get planned production slots, realistic lead times and early warning when a drawing or material changes — the practical definition of stable delivery.
Send the 3D model, 2D drawing, flatness and parallelism requirements, locating scheme and annual quantity. We will review the design for manufacturability, propose a process route and quote prototype, pilot and production volumes with lead times we can hold.
