Humanoid Robot Foot Sole Plate — Two Faces Parallel to 0.01 mm
A sole plate looks like a plate with holes, but it is actually the end of the humanoid robot tolerance chain: a six-axis force sensor on top, anti-slip pads underneath, and 0.02 mm of parallelism error puts bending cross-talk into the sensor reading. We use vacuum chucking on the flip plus two stress relief cycles to hold 0.01 mm parallelism, and mask the sensor mounting face during anodizing so no shims are needed at assembly.
Three Hidden Requirements for a Sole Plate
- Both faces parallel — sensor pads on top, anti-slip pads underneath, 0.01 mm parallelism. Flipping the part onto setting blocks lets parallelism drift with the blocks and chips, so we locate on a datum edge plus vacuum chuck.
- Sensor face flatness — six-axis force sensors are extremely sensitive to mounting face flatness; only within 0.01 mm can all four corners load evenly. Once the face warps, walking force signals pick up a DC offset.
- Anodizing film thickness — 25-40 µm of hard anodizing raises the sensor mounting face and leaves the four corners non-coplanar. We mask the sensor face and anti-slip pad grooves and re-check flatness after anodizing.
- Impact Resistance and Light Weighting — landing impact goes straight into the sole plate; 7075-T6 specific strength allows 6 mm plate that carries several times body weight, while weight-relief pockets are cut in unloaded zones.

Production Process: 9 Operations
| 01 | Structure and Load Review Sensor model and mounting holes, anti-slip pad specification, toe/heel zoning and landing impact load confirmed. |
| 02 | Material and Flaw Detection 7075-T6 plate received by heat number with a 3.1 material certificate; thick plate ultrasonically sampled to exclude lamination. |
| 03 | Rough mill front face Front face, weight-relief pockets and pad slots are rough milled from the datum edge, leaving 0.6 mm per side. |
| 04 | First stress relief Low-temperature stress relief reduces warping during later flip-side machining. |
| 05 | Rough mill and semi-finish on the flip Held on a vacuum chuck, back face rough milled and both faces semi-finished to establish the parallelism datum. |
| 06 | Second stress relief Second stress relief after semi-finishing stabilizes plate form and prevents slow springback after finishing. |
| 07 | Finish mill both faces and hole pattern Sensor mounting face and back face finish milled to 0.01 mm parallelism and 0.01 mm flatness; mounting holes drilled and reamed, threads tapped, anti-slip pad grooves milled. |
| 08 | Hard Anodizing and Masking Sensor face and pad grooves are masked before 25 µm hard anodizing; flatness and bore diameters are re-checked afterwards. |
| 09 | Inspection and Packing CMM checks parallelism, flatness, hole position and groove depth; individual bubble bag plus flat-pack to prevent distortion. |

Custom Engineering
Foot structure is tightly coupled to gait strategy, so sole plates are almost always custom.
- Sensor Compatibility — 6-axis force, single-axis force or thin-film pressure mapping; cavities, holes and cable notches are cut to the model.
- Zone-Specific Customization — toe, sole and heel zones, flexure hinge slots and anti-slip pad layout designed around the gait.
- Material Selection — 7075 for weight, 6061 for cost, titanium for impact and corrosion resistance, with a weight-cost comparison provided.
- Integrated Machining — ankle mounting bosses and cable channels can be machined into the same part, reducing your assembly part count.
Confidentiality and IP Protection
The drawings of a complete humanoid robot are often the core competitiveness of the next machine generation. We apply both physical and data isolation on a per-project basis.
- NDA First — mutual NDA and non-circumvention agreement signed before drawings are received.
- Isolated Secure Area — dedicated machines and staff, no photography and no phones inside the area.
- Not displayed — drawings, part photos and customer logos never enter sample cabinets, catalogs, the website or social media.
- Data Isolation — programs and models sit on an access-controlled server, destroyed at project end with a written record.
- Code-named — traveler cards and packaging labels use internal codes instead of customer part numbers.

For plate parts the craft lies in the flip: how the datum is carried over, how the fixture holds, and which step stress relief sits at, decide whether the part lands at 0.01 mm or 0.04 mm. We write these into work instructions instead of relying on one operator's feel.
