Quick-Change Fixture Plate with Interchangeable Inserts Achieving 0.005mm Swap Repeatability and Under 15 Seconds Changeover on Hard Anodized Aluminum Base for Robotic Load Stations
Quick-Change Fixture Plate
,Interchangeable Insert Pockets
,0.005mm Repeatability
This quick-change fixture plate lets a robotic load station run several part types without touching the robot programme. Each insert block carries the part-specific pocket and drops into a pocket in the base, located by two dowels and held by a lever clamp. The number that matters is not the pocket accuracy of one insert, but how far the working point moves when inserts are swapped: we hold that to 0.005 mm across 50 changeovers.
The base is machined from 6061-T6 or 7075-T6 aluminum with insert pockets, dowel holes and clamp seats completed in one clamping. Inserts are machined separately, then match-marked to the base so a replacement insert can be made later without re-fitting the whole plate. Pockets are masked during hard anodizing to preserve the fit.
- Drawing and changeover review. We confirm pocket size, dowel pattern, clamp type, insert material and the repeatability target, then quote within one working day.
- Material verification. Base plate and insert stock are checked for grade and temper against the mill certificate.
- Stress relief and base facing. The base is stress relieved and faced to 0.008 mm flatness, establishing the reference for every pocket.
- Insert pockets. Pockets are rough and finish machined to ±0.01 mm depth, with the corners relieved so an insert seats on its floor and dowels, not on a corner radius.
- Dowel holes. Holes are drilled, bored and reamed to H6 with position held to ±0.008 mm, then checked before the inserts are made.
- Insert machining. Inserts are machined from the same programme family, with the dowel holes and part pocket in one clamping, then match-marked.
- Assembly and clamp setup. Clamp seats are machined, lever or pneumatic clamps installed and adjusted, and the plate is hard anodized with pockets masked.
- Swap test. Inserts are changed 50 times and the working point measured each time on a CMM; the log ships with the plate as the repeatability record.
| Swap repeatability | 0.005 mm across 50 changeovers |
|---|---|
| Insert pocket depth | ±0.01 mm |
| Dowel hole | H6 reamed, position ±0.008 mm |
| Base flatness | 0.008 mm |
| Pocket to dowel position | 0.008 mm |
| Changeover time | Under 15 seconds with lever clamp |
| Surface roughness | Ra 0.8 µm on pocket floors |
A fixture that repeats once is easy; a fixture that repeats after a hundred changes is the one that keeps a cell running. Wear shows up first at the dowels and the pocket floor, so we specify hardened dowels where the duty is high, keep the pocket floor large enough to spread the clamp load, and avoid locating on a machined corner that will wear to a radius. During the swap test we measure the same reference feature on the insert after every change and record the spread; if the spread exceeds 0.005 mm the design is changed before the plate ships.
Base size, insert count, pocket layout, dowel pattern, clamp type, insert material and wear protection are all built to your drawing. One plate is a normal order with no tooling charge and no setup fee, and the prototype includes the same swap test as production. If a design would make inserts interchangeable in theory but not in practice, our engineer flags it before machining.
- NDA first. Mutual non-disclosure is signed before drawings, models or samples are released.
- No public reference. Confidential plates and insert geometries never appear in samples, catalogues or website photos.
- Separated cell. Sensitive work runs with named operators and project-coded programmes.
- Partner control. Anodizing suppliers receive process specifications only.
Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has machined custom parts since 2008 and runs four-axis and five-axis machining centres, turn-mill lathes, CNC lathes and milling machines. The plant employs 90 to 102 people under ISO 9001:2015, serves more than 200 customers, exports 50 to 60 percent of output and records annual sales of USD 10 to 20 million. A named engineer owns every custom project from DFM to first article.
- Confirmed dates. Prototypes 5 to 8 working days, batch orders 18 to 30 working days after drawing approval, including the swap test.
- Repeat orders skip setup. Programmes, fixtures and test logs stay on file.
- Reserved slots. Blanket orders are booked into fixed monthly machine time.
- Early warning. If material, clamps or anodizing threaten the date, you hear it before the date is missed.
- Dispatch evidence. Photos, inspection report, swap test log and packing list before shipment.

The base and its inserts are packed separately: each insert in a bubble bag inside a labelled compartment, the base in an EPE cavity tray, both in a five-layer export carton with the match-mark record enclosed. Sea freight ships on fumigation-free plywood pallets; neutral cartons are available.
We load and unload the inserts 50 times and measure the same reference feature on a CMM after each change. The spread, not the single best reading, is what we report.
Yes. The base and inserts are match-marked and the programme is stored under the project code, so a replacement insert is machined to the recorded datum.
A pneumatic or over-centre lever clamp gives the fastest and most consistent closure; we machine the clamp seat so the clamp body repeats against a hard stop rather than against the insert.
