Detailed Specifications & Features

Drawing in · Part out · NDA first — 0.008 mm profile tolerance · 0.8 mm thin wall · sealed flange

This multi-facet curved aluminum instrument housing is machined on a turn-mill platform for medical robotic arms and handheld instruments. The curved shell, flat facet datums, sealed flange and thin wall are produced in a single clamping to hold 0.008 mm profile on the sealing surfaces.

Who We Are

Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd is a custom machining plant established in 2008 in Dongguan, China. We operate four-axis and five-axis machining centres, turn-mill combined lathes, CNC lathes and milling machines, employ around 90 to 102 people and work to an ISO 9001:2015 quality system. Over 200 customers have been served, 50 to 60 percent of our output is exported, and annual sales are between USD 10 million and 20 million. Our engineers work from drawings rather than from a catalogue, which is why a multi-facet housing with a sealed flange is a normal job for us.

Housing Description

This instrument housing combines a curved outer shell with several flat facets that carry mounting pads, a connector cut-out and a display window. The facets are not cosmetic: they are the datum for the PCB stand-offs, the connector centre line and the flange bolt pattern, so their angle and position decide whether the electronics drop in without shimming. The bottom flange carries an O-ring groove for a sealed joint, and the wall thins to 0.8 mm in the curved section to keep the assembly light for a robotic arm or a handheld medical instrument.

We machine the part on a turn-mill platform with 4+1 axis interpolation: the round flange and bore are turned, then the facets, window, connector opening and O-ring groove are milled without releasing the part. One clamping means the flange face, the bore and the facet datums share a single origin, which is the only practical way to hold 0.008 mm profile on the sealing surfaces while keeping the outer form crisp.

Process Route
  1. File review and process plan. STEP or 2D drawing is checked for tool reach, wall thickness, groove access and datum consistency; a process plan and quotation follow within one working day.
  2. Material verification. Aluminum plate or extruded bar is checked for grade, temper and mill certificate; stainless grades are PMI checked when specified.
  3. Stress relief and sawing. Blanks are cut oversize and stress relieved so the thin curved wall does not spring after the final pass.
  4. Turning of flange and bore. Flange diameter, bore and O-ring groove are turned in one clamping to keep coaxiality at 0.01 mm.
  5. Facet milling and window cut-out. The part stays on the same machine; facets are interpolated with a ball-nose cutter, then the window and connector opening are contour milled with 0.3 mm corner radii.
  6. Thin-wall finishing. Light finishing passes with high spindle speed and controlled feed keep the 0.8 mm wall flat and free of chatter marks.
  7. Deburr, clean and seal check. Edges are broken to the drawing, the part is ultrasonically cleaned, and the O-ring groove is checked with a gauge or a leak test when the application requires it.
  8. Finish and final inspection. Anodizing, chromate conversion or PVD is applied per sample, then CMM and profile projection confirm the critical dimensions before packing.

Custom and Non-Standard Work

The housing is built to your model, not to a fixed size list. We regularly change the facet count, the facet angle, the window shape, the connector cut-out, the flange bolt circle, the O-ring section, the wall thickness and the finish. A single unit is enough to start, with no tooling charge and no setup fee, and the prototype is machined with the same fixture and inspection plan as the batch. If a drawing asks for a feature that would raise cost without adding function, our engineer returns a DFM note with a lower-cost alternative and waits for your approval before cutting metal.

Confidentiality and Program Control
  • NDA first. We sign a mutual non-disclosure agreement before receiving models or drawings, covering geometry, volumes, end use and customer identity.
  • No portfolio use. Confidential housings never appear in samples, catalogues, website pages, trade fairs or social media, and photographs require written release.
  • Dedicated cell. Sensitive projects run in a segregated area with named operators; fixtures and programs are stored under a project code, not the customer name.
  • Data control. Files sit on an access-controlled server, outside machining and finishing partners receive process specifications only, and data is returned or destroyed at project close on request.
  • Traceability without exposure. Batch records are kept internally for three years so a quality question can be answered without disclosing the design to a third party.
Delivery Consistency
  • Fixed schedule slots. Blanket and repeat orders are booked into reserved machine time, so the same part lands in the same week each month.
  • Confirmed dates. Prototypes in 5 to 8 working days, batch orders in 18 to 28 working days after drawing approval, with the date written into the order confirmation.
  • Repeat orders skip setup. Programs, fixtures and inspection plans stay on file, which removes programming and first-article time from the second order onward.
  • Risk notice. If material, finishing or leak testing puts the date at risk, you hear it before the date is missed, with a partial shipment or air-freight option.
  • Dispatch evidence. Photos, inspection report and packing list before shipment; tracking number on the day of dispatch.

Packing for Export

Each housing goes into a bubble bag, sits in a custom EPE cavity tray so anodized facets cannot rub, and is sealed in a moisture barrier bag with desiccant. The tray fits a five-layer export carton printed with part number, quantity and batch code, and sea freight shipments are palletised on fumigation-free plywood with strapping and stretch film. Neutral cartons are available for customers selling under their own brand.

FAQ
How is 0.008 mm profile achieved on a curved faceted housing?

The flange, bore and facets are machined in one clamping on a turn-mill centre, then finished with light passes and verified on a CMM against the 3D model. Re-fixturing is what usually breaks this tolerance, so we avoid it.

Can the wall be thinner than 0.8 mm?

In aluminum we can go to 0.6 mm on short unsupported sections after a DFM review; below that, distortion and handling risk rise faster than the weight saving.

Do you sign an NDA and keep the part off your website?

Yes. The NDA is signed before files are released, and confidential parts are excluded from samples, photos and case studies by default.

Can you supply the O-ring and leak test report?

Yes. We can source the O-ring to the groove specification and provide a helium leak test report when the housing is a sealed assembly.

What is the smallest order?

One piece. There is no tooling charge, and the prototype is quoted at the same standard as production.

Send the model, the sealing requirement and the expected monthly quantity, and we will reply with a DFM review, a quotation and a delivery slot within one working day.
