EV Half Shaft with Flange Face Runout 0.01mm, Spline to Journal Coaxiality 0.01mm and Journal Runout 0.008mm
EV Half Shaft Turning
,Flange Face Runout 0.01
,Spline Coaxial Journal
The middle of a half shaft does almost nothing. The flange bolts to the wheel hub or the gearbox output, the spline engages the joint, and the journal carries the bearing — and each end has its own idea of where the axis is. If the flange face is not square to the spline, the joint runs at an angle; if the spline is not coaxial with the journal, the bearing takes a side load it was never designed for. Measured separately, both ends pass. Measured against one datum, the part is out.
So the ends are machined from a shared reference rather than as two independent jobs: the shaft is turned between centres, the spline and the journal are generated on that same axis, and the flange face is faced after the spline so its runout is measured against the spline pitch diameter rather than against the bar. The part is then balanced, because an unbalanced half shaft at motor speed transmits a vibration the wheel bearing hears as a rumble.
| Stage | Operation | Why It Is Controlled This Way |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bar and certificate | 42CrMo, SCM435 or 40Cr bar with mill certificate traceable to the heat number. |
| 2 | Rough turn between centres | Both ends centred and the full profile roughed from one axis, with stock left for hardening and finishing. |
| 3 | Stress relief | Rough blanks stress relieved so long thin sections do not move during the finishing passes. |
| 4 | Semi-finish and spline preparation | Diameters brought near size; spline major and minor diameters prepared for hobbing or milling after hardening. |
| 5 | Induction hardening | Spline and journal surfaces hardened to drawing hardness and case depth; distortion recorded per batch. |
| 6 | Spline and journal finishing | Spline cut or finished and the journal turned or ground on the same centres, so both ends share one axis. |
| 7 | Flange facing and bolt holes | Flange faced after the spline and its holes drilled on the pitch circle; face runout measured to the spline pitch diameter. |
| 8 | Balance, inspection, pack | Dynamic balance to grade, runout and coaxiality on V-blocks, thread gauge, hardness and CMM report; ends protected for shipping. |

A half shaft defines the interface between a gearbox and a wheel, so the drawing reveals spline geometry, flange pattern and load class — that is confidential vehicle engineering, not a commodity dimension. We sign a mutual NDA before any file is opened, in English or Chinese or on your own form, and return a countersigned copy before work starts. Access is limited to the project engineer, the lathe programmer and the cell supervisor, with the file in a restricted folder rather than the open shop network. No photographs of customer parts are taken for our catalogue or website, customer parts are never displayed or reused as samples, subcontracting requires your written approval, and at program close files and inspection data are deleted or returned with written confirmation.
Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has been machining custom parts since 2008: 15+ years, 90 to 100 staff, 50–60% exported to North America and Europe, 200+ customers served, turnover in the RMB 10–20 million band. The floor holds CNC lathes, turn-mill combined centres with live tooling and sub-spindle, and 4-axis / 5-axis machining centres under an ISO 9001:2015 system, producing parts for automotive, medical, robotics, aerospace, automation, laser, LED, lithium battery and precision instrument programs. Turning, spline and flange machining, hardening coordination, balancing and CMM inspection are managed in our own plant in Dongguan.
Drivetrain and turned components from this plant ship into ten industries. Each line is a category we machine regularly, with the parts customers actually order.
| Industry | Typical Parts We Machine |
|---|---|
| Consumer electronics | Phone, tablet and laptop housings / heat spreaders / camera brackets / VR and AR headset structural parts / smart wearable enclosures |
| Automation and industrial equipment | Automation jigs and fixtures / module frames / linear guide blocks / motor mounts / sensor housings / conveyor line components |
| Semiconductor and vacuum | Vacuum chamber bodies / vacuum fittings / precision bases for semiconductor equipment / thermal and insulating parts / inspection tooling |
| Medical equipment | Surgical instrument bases / medical instrument housings / endoscope components / aesthetic device structural parts (medical grade aluminium and stainless) |
| Automotive | New energy motor housings / battery end plates / sensor brackets / lighting structural parts / retrofit components / hydraulic valve blocks |

| Telecom | 5G heat dissipation cavities / filter components / signal adapter structural parts / telecom equipment enclosures |
| Robotics | Robot arm joint parts / robot bases / reducer housings / AGV structural components |
| Instrumentation | Test equipment housings / precision gauge bases / flow meter components / laboratory equipment parts |
All ten sectors run through the same plant and the same ISO 9001:2015 inspection discipline — only the material, finish and documentation package change.
- Prototype: 5–8 working days including hardening and balancing; 3–5 days for a soft-state sample.
- Small batch 10–100 pcs: 10–18 working days.
- Repeat orders: run from archived programs, centres and spline tool list; flange runout and coaxiality repeat to the same values.
- Capacity: 10,000 pieces per month across the plant.
- Visibility: a dated progress note with photographs of your actual shafts at spline cutting, flange facing and inspection.
- Shipping: splines sleeved, threads capped, shafts in v-groove cradles or tubes, flanges protected so a face cannot be nicked in transit.
- Rush: hardening and balancing slots booked weekly; tell us the deadline and we confirm before you order.
A: After. The flange is faced once the spline exists, so its runout can be measured against the spline pitch diameter — the surface the joint actually engages — rather than against the bar or the outside diameter.
A: Both are generated from the same centres and finished in the same setup family, so they share one axis. Coaxiality is then measured on V-blocks and confirmed on the CMM, and the number is on the report rather than assumed from the programme.
A: Spline milling and finishing are on our own machines; where a very long spline or a special profile needs hobbing we coordinate it with an approved partner and still inspect the finished tooth thickness and runout in our plant before shipping.
A: Because at motor speed an unbalanced shaft transmits a vibration the wheel bearing hears as a rumble the driver notices before the drawing does. We balance to G6.3 or G2.5 at your service speed and ship the record, either bare or as an assembly.
A: One piece, no tooling charge. Price follows material, length, spline type, hardening, balancing grade and flange pattern; a written quotation normally returns within 24 hours.
A: Yes. NDA signed and countersigned before the file is opened, access limited to the engineer, programmer and supervisor, no photographs of customer parts, nothing published without written permission.
Attach the drawing or model with the quantity, the hardening and balancing requirements, and the deadline; you will get a quotation, the process route including where the spline and flange are finished, and a firm delivery date. NDA paperwork can be dealt with in the same exchange.
