Why Titanium Thin Walls Move

Titanium is machined for two reasons: it keeps strength where aluminium softens, and it survives environments where corrosion would end an aluminium part in months. Both come at a cost. TC4 conducts heat poorly, so heat concentrates at the cutting edge and the workpiece grows as it warms; it springs back elastically under the tool, so a wall that measures correctly on the machine can relax out of tolerance once the fixture is released; and it work-hardens if the tool rubs instead of cutting.

A thin-wall cavity therefore cannot be made by cutting faster. It is made by controlling heat input and removing material in a sequence that keeps the remaining section balanced — rough symmetrically, let the part stabilise, semi-finish, measure, then take the final pass with a reduced radial engagement and a sharp, coated tool. Ribs at 0.8 mm are achievable, but only with that discipline and with in-process measurement.

Process Route
Stage Operation Control Point
1 Billet and certificate TC4 billet with mill certificate traceable to heat number; ultrasonic inspection report on request for aerospace programs.
2 Fixture and datum Part held on a machined soft-jaw or dedicated fixture so clamping force does not pre-load the thin section being cut.
3 Symmetric roughing Material removed alternately from both sides of the ribs to keep residual stress balanced; high-pressure coolant throughout.
4 Stabilisation pause Part allowed to cool and relax before semi-finishing; dimensions re-checked against the roughing report.
5 Semi-finish and 5-axis finish Reduced radial engagement, constant tool engagement angle, tilted axis along curved pockets; ribs finished last so they are not supporting a heavy cut.
6 In-process measurement Wall thickness checked with an ultrasonic gauge and CMM while still fixtured, so a drift is caught before the part is released.
7 Deburr and surface Hand deburr at rib roots, bead blast or as-machined finish; passivation on request; no anodize unless specified.
8 Final inspection and pack CMM report with wall, pocket depth and flatness; part protected and bagged individually.

Three numbers govern the quote on a titanium cavity: minimum wall, depth-to-width ratio, and how much of the material has to come out. Tell us all three up front and the process route — and the honest lead time — can be set before the drawing is even finished.

Materials, Finishes and Custom Geometry
  • Material: TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) standard; Ti-6242 for higher temperature; 17-4PH or 316L stainless where titanium is not required; 6061 aluminium for a cost-down variant.
  • Finish: as-machined Ra 0.8 µm; bead blast matte; polished Ra 0.4 on request; passivation or chemical conversion for specific programs; no anodize on titanium.
  • Geometry: shallow pockets, deep pockets, curved and organic contours, ribs from 0.8 mm, boss and flange features, seal grooves, mounting ears.
  • Interfaces: tapped holes M2 upward, dowel holes, O-ring grooves, optical seat, insert pockets.
  • Size: 20 mm to 350 mm overall; wall from 0.8 mm; removal volumes up to 80% of the billet.
  • Documentation: mill certificate, dimensional report, surface integrity note, first article report; FAI to AS9102 format on request.
Confidentiality Around Aerospace and Optical Work

Aerospace and instrument cavities are usually covered by a program NDA before a drawing is even released, and we work inside that expectation. A mutual NDA is signed before any file is opened — ours in English or Chinese, or your own form — and a countersigned copy goes back before work starts. Only the project engineer, the 5-axis programmer and the cell supervisor can access the file, which sits in a restricted folder rather than on the shop network. No photographs of customer parts are taken for our catalogue or website, customer parts are never displayed or reused as samples, subcontracting requires your written approval, and at program close files and inspection data are deleted or returned with written confirmation.

Who Machines It

Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has been machining custom parts since 2008: 15+ years, 90 to 100 staff, 50–60% exported to North America and Europe, 200+ customers served, turnover in the RMB 10–20 million band. The floor holds 4-axis and 5-axis CNC machining centres, turn-mill combined lathes and CNC lathes under an ISO 9001:2015 system, producing titanium, aluminium and stainless parts for medical, robotics, automotive, aerospace, automation, laser, LED, lithium battery and precision instrument programs. Titanium machining, fixture building, measurement and inspection are all in our own hands in Dongguan.

Ten Sectors, One Workshop

Titanium and aluminium cavities from this plant ship into ten industries. Each line is a category we machine regularly, with the parts customers actually order.

Industry Typical Parts We Machine
Consumer electronics Phone, tablet and laptop housings / heat spreaders / camera brackets / VR and AR headset structural parts / smart wearable enclosures
Automation and industrial equipment Automation jigs and fixtures / module frames / linear guide blocks / motor mounts / sensor housings / conveyor line components
Semiconductor and vacuum Vacuum chamber bodies / vacuum fittings / precision bases for semiconductor equipment / thermal and insulating parts / inspection tooling
Medical equipment Surgical instrument bases / medical instrument housings / endoscope components / aesthetic device structural parts (medical grade aluminium and stainless)
Automotive New energy motor housings / battery end plates / sensor brackets / lighting structural parts / retrofit components / hydraulic valve blocks
Aerospace and UAV Aircraft structural parts / UAV frames / landing gear components / avionics instrument housings (lightweight precision parts)
Optics and photonics Optical lens barrels / lens mounts / light source heat sinks / camera module brackets / inspection optical platforms
Telecom 5G heat dissipation cavities / filter components / signal adapter structural parts / telecom equipment enclosures
Robotics Robot arm joint parts / robot bases / reducer housings / AGV structural components
Instrumentation Test equipment housings / precision gauge bases / flow meter components / laboratory equipment parts

All ten sectors run through the same plant and the same ISO 9001:2015 inspection discipline — only the material, finish and documentation package change.

Delivery and Repeatability
  • Prototype: 5–10 working days after drawing approval (titanium cuts slowly — we quote the real number rather than a hopeful one).
  • Small batch 10–100 pcs: 12–20 working days depending on removal volume.
  • Repeat orders: run from archived programs, fixtures and tool lists; wall values and inspection plan are identical to the first delivery.
  • Capacity: 10,000 pieces per month across the plant, with titanium planned into reserved cell slots.
  • Visibility: a dated progress note with photographs of your actual part at roughing, finishing and measurement.
  • Shipping: parts bagged with protective film, foam-lined export carton or crate, express or air and sea per your forwarder.
  • Rush: overtime slots available; for titanium we will tell you honestly whether the date is achievable before you commit.
Buyer Questions
Q: How thin a titanium wall can you actually hold?

A: 0.8 mm on a rib that is supported at both ends and no taller than about three times the wall, measured with an ultrasonic gauge while fixtured and again after release. Thinner is possible on short unsupported features after a DFM conversation, but we will tell you the risk rather than accept an order that cannot be met repeatably.

Q: Why does titanium take longer than aluminium?

A: TC4 conducts heat away about ten times more slowly than 6061, so cutting speed is roughly a third and heat has to be carried away by coolant and tool geometry rather than by the workpiece. Removing the same volume takes 30–50% longer, and the fixture and measurement time is higher because thin sections must be checked while still held.

Q: How do you stop the part moving after it is released from the fixture?

A: By removing material symmetrically, pausing for the part to stabilise before semi-finishing, and measuring while the part is still fixtured so any drift is caught before the final pass. Where a design has a very unbalanced section, we say so in the DFM note and suggest a rib or a stress-relief step rather than discovering it at inspection.

Q: Do you provide material and inspection documentation for aerospace programs?

A: Yes. Mill certificate traceable to heat number, dimensional report with the actual measured values, surface integrity note, and a first article report; FAI to AS9102 format and ultrasonic inspection of the billet can be arranged at quotation stage.

Q: Minimum order and quotation speed?

A: One piece, no tooling charge for standard work. Price follows removal volume, minimum wall, depth-to-width ratio, tolerance band and documentation package; a written quotation normally returns within 24 hours with a DFM note on any feature at risk.

Q: Will you sign an NDA before receiving the model?

A: Yes, and for aerospace programs we expect it. NDA signed and countersigned before the file is opened, access limited to the engineer, programmer and supervisor, no photographs of customer parts, nothing published without written permission.

Send the Drawing, Get a Date and a Price. Attach the model or drawing with the quantity, the minimum wall and the deadline, and you will get a quotation, a process route, and a delivery date that reflects how titanium actually machines. NDA paperwork can be handled in the same exchange.
