What A Lens Drawer Has To Get Right
A protective lens drawer is the part an operator pulls out every time the window needs cleaning or replacing. It slides in a rail in the cutting head, carries the protective glass, and has to seat in exactly the same position every time — a drawer that sits 0.05 mm off pushes the window out of the beam path and the cut quality changes without anyone touching a setting.
So the machining job is not "a flat plate with a hole". It is a plate whose two rail edges are parallel and square to each other, whose window pocket sits on the same datum as those rails, whose thickness is uniform so it does not rock, and whose anodized surface does not build up on the sliding faces or flake off into the optical path. We machine all of that in as few set-ups as possible, from 6061-T6 plate, and anodize after masking the fits.
Process Route
| Step | Operation | Control point |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Plate selection and stress relief | 6061-T6 plate cut oversize; saw-cut stress relieved before the first face cut so the part does not bow after machining. |
| 2 | Face milling both sides | Both faces milled parallel to 0.02 mm and to final thickness ±0.05 mm; flatness checked on a granite plate. |
| 3 | Datum edges | Two perpendicular reference edges milled and used as the datum for every later feature. |
| 4 | Slide rail and window pocket | Dovetail or straight rail profile milled with the pocket in the same set-up, so rail width and pocket position share one datum. |
| 5 | Drilling, tapping, edge break | Mounting holes and M3/M4 threads drilled and tapped; every edge broken 0.2-0.3 mm so the drawer cannot scratch the head bore. |
| 6 | Deburr and pre-anodize prep | Bead blast or bright dip per drawing; threads and sliding faces masked for anodizing. |
| 7 | Anodizing | Type II sulphuric anodize 10-15 µm in black, silver or clear; hard anodize 25-50 µm where the drawer sees wear. |
| 8 | Inspection and packing | Slide width, thickness, flatness and thread gauging recorded; parts bagged individually so anodized faces do not rub in transit. |
Tolerance And Finish
| Feature | Held to | Verified by |
|---|---|---|
| Slide rail width | ±0.01 mm | Micrometer plus pin gauge, 100% on fit faces |
| Rail parallelism and squareness | 0.02 mm | CMM and granite plate |
| Plate thickness | ±0.05 mm | Micrometer, 5 points |
| Plate flatness | 0.03 mm | Granite plate plus indicator |
| Window pocket position | ±0.03 mm | CMM on the rail datum |
| Pocket depth and window opening | ±0.05 mm | Depth gauge, CMM |
| Threaded holes | M3 / M4 6H, position ±0.05 mm | Thread plug gauge plus CMM |
| Anodize thickness | 10-15 µm Type II | Coating thickness gauge, batch record |
| Anodize adhesion | No flake, no dye pull | Cross-hatch and visual per batch |
Anodizing grows the surface by roughly half the coating thickness per side, which is enough to close a 0.01 mm slide fit. That is why sliding faces and threads are masked, and why the rail width is machined to the low half of the tolerance band before coating.

How We Protect Your Design
A lens drawer drawing describes the optical layout of your laser head — window size, working distance, rail geometry. Before any file is opened we sign a mutual NDA, in English or Chinese, or on your own form, and return a countersigned copy before work starts. Access inside the plant is limited to the project engineer, the milling programmer and the cell supervisor; files sit in a restricted folder, not on the open shop network. The cell is a camera-free area: no photographs, no video, no social posts, and no customer part kept on display or offered as a sample to another buyer. Subcontracting requires your written approval, and at program close drawings and inspection data are deleted or returned with written confirmation.
The Plant Behind The Part
Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has machined custom metal parts since 2008 — 15+ years, 90 to 100 staff, 50–60% of output exported to North America and Europe, more than 200 customers served, turnover in the RMB 10–20 million band. The floor runs 4-axis and 5-axis CNC machining centres, turn-mill combined lathes and CNC lathes under an ISO 9001:2015 quality system, with in-house milling, turning, finishing coordination and inspection. Aluminium plate work, anodize coordination and final inspection for your drawer happen in our own plant in Dongguan, so your date is not exposed to a middleman.
Ten Industries We Machine For
Our aluminium and stainless parts go into ten sectors. The list below is what customers actually order from this plant, not a marketing wish-list.
| Industry | Typical parts we machine |
|---|---|
| Consumer electronics | Phone, tablet and laptop housings / heat spreaders / camera brackets / VR and AR headset structural parts / smart wearable enclosures |
| Automation and industrial equipment | Automation jigs and fixtures / module frames / linear guide blocks / motor mounts / sensor housings / conveyor line components |
| Semiconductor and vacuum | Vacuum chamber bodies / vacuum fittings / precision bases for semiconductor equipment / thermal and insulating parts / inspection tooling |
| Medical equipment | Surgical instrument bases / medical instrument housings / endoscope components / aesthetic device structural parts (medical grade aluminium and stainless) |
| Automotive | New energy motor housings / battery end plates / sensor brackets / lighting structural parts / retrofit components / hydraulic valve blocks |
| Aerospace and UAV | Aircraft structural parts / UAV frames / landing gear components / avionics instrument housings (lightweight precision parts) |
| Optics and photonics | Optical lens barrels / lens mounts / light source heat sinks / camera module brackets / inspection optical platforms |
| Telecom | 5G heat dissipation cavities / filter components / signal adapter structural parts / telecom equipment enclosures |
| Robotics | Robot arm joint parts / robot bases / reducer housings / AGV structural components |
| Instrumentation | Test equipment housings / precision gauge bases / flow meter components / laboratory equipment parts |
All ten sectors run through the same plant and the same ISO 9001:2015 inspection discipline — only the material, finish and documentation package change.
Delivery You Can Plan Around
- Prototype: 3–7 working days after drawing approval, including anodize; 10–12 days where a new fixture or hard anodize is involved.
- Small batch 10–100 pcs: 7–14 working days.
- Repeat orders: released from the archived program, fixture and anodize rack — no re-programming, no colour re-approval.
- Capacity: 10,000 pieces per month across the plant.
- Visibility: a dated progress note with photos of your actual parts at milling, anodize and inspection stages.
- Shipping: individually bagged, foam-lined export carton, DHL / FedEx / UPS express or air and sea per your forwarder, customs documents prepared.
- Rush: weekly overtime slots and an express anodize line are held for line-down situations — tell us the date you must hit and we confirm before the order.
Questions Laser Head Buyers Ask
Q: How do you keep the drawer sliding without play?
A: The rail width and the window pocket are machined in the same set-up from the same datum, then the rail width is held to ±0.01 mm and checked with a pin gauge. Because anodize adds 5–7 µm per side, the rail is machined to the low half of the band and the sliding faces are masked so the fit does not close up after coating.
Q: Will the anodized surface flake or shed into the optical path?
A: Type II anodize on 6061 is a conversion layer, not a paint film, so it does not flake when the pre-treatment is right. We bright-dip or bead blast before coating, control the bath per batch, and check adhesion and colour on a coupon from every lot. Edges are broken before anodizing because a sharp edge is where coating failures start.
Q: Can you match the drawer to a head we did not design?
A: Yes. Send the worn drawer, the head bore dimensions or a photo with a caliper reading and we rebuild the model, send it for your approval, then machine. Reverse engineering of an existing protective window carrier is routine work for us.
Q: What is the minimum order, and how is the price built?
A: One piece, with no tooling charge and no setup fee. Price follows plate thickness, part size, window count, rail type, tolerance band, anodize type and masking, so a drawing plus quantity normally brings a written quotation within 24 hours.
Q: Can you hold the same fit across repeat orders?
A: Yes. Programs, fixtures and the anodize rack are archived per part number, and the rail is cut to the middle of your band rather than to a limit. Repeat orders normally ship in a third of the first order’s lead time and measure the same.
Q: Do you sign NDAs before receiving the drawing?
A: Yes, routinely, and we return a countersigned copy before work starts. Only the engineer, programmer and cell supervisor see the file, no photographs leave the cell, and nothing about your part appears in our catalogue or website.
