Product Description
Detailed Specifications & Features
Ribs follow the load path · thin walls without chatter
Load path optimized arm connector, 6061-T6, rib pockets 1.5 mm thick
Lighter than a pocketed block, stiffer than a solid one · drawings released under mutual NDA

Lightening Is Not the Same as Hollowing

Most "lightweight" linkages are a solid block with a few big pockets cut into it. That removes weight from wherever is convenient, leaves the load path untouched, and produces walls that vary from 1 mm to 12 mm in the same part. The result is a link that rings under load, deflects where you did not expect, and chatters on the finishing pass.

This connector starts from the opposite direction. Your load case is run through a load path study, material is removed where it carries nothing, and what remains becomes a rib pattern that follows the load path from the 12-bolt flange to the journal boss. Ribs are then machined at a controlled thickness with fillets at every junction, so the part that comes off the machine is the one the analysis described.

How a Rib Body Is Machined Without Distortion

Ten stages. Most of the craft here is in the order of operations: a thin-ribbed part machined in the wrong sequence comes out twisted no matter how good the machine is.

01Load case and geometry review. Direction and magnitude of the working load, mounting interfaces, bore positions and available envelope are reviewed; where a load path study exists we machine to it, where it does not we advise on rib layout before quoting.
02Billet selection. 6061-T6 or 7075-T6 is chosen against the stiffness target; a 6061 block is stress relieved before roughing so the ribs do not close up as material leaves.
03Roughing with large radial stock. Pockets are roughed leaving 1.5-2 mm on all rib faces; thin ribs are never roughed to size, because the next operation would move them.
04Intermediate stress relief. The part rests and is re-datumed. This single step is what separates a straight rib body from a warped one.
05Semi-finish ribs and pocket floors. Rib flanks and floors are brought to 0.3 mm, with the tool path following the rib direction rather than zig-zagging across it, to keep wall pressure even.
06Finish rib flanks and fillets. Small diameter cutters on a 5-axis path machine rib flanks and junction fillets in one continuous pass, which controls both thickness and surface without a secondary operation.
07Bores, flange pattern and datum faces. Journal bore, flange spigot and bolt circle are machined in a single clamping with the ribs already finished, so the datum comes from the finished part rather than from a rough one.
08Thickness verification before anodize. Rib and wall thickness are checked by ultrasonic gauge at defined points, and the part is straightened on a granite plate if the record shows drift.
09Anodize with bores masked. Clear or black anodize with the journal bore and spigot masked so the fit is unchanged; thin ribs are racked individually to avoid coating buildup on edges.
10CMM, weight record and marking. Bore position, flange flatness and straightness recorded, part weighed against the target, serial laser marked, then packed in a shaped cradle.

What "load path optimized" means in practice here. We do not just cut deeper pockets. The rib pattern is fixed before roughing, rib thickness is treated as a controlled dimension with a tolerance, and every part is weighed so a drifting wall shows up as a number rather than as a customer complaint about stiffness.

Confidentiality

A load case and an optimized geometry together describe how your robot performs, so both stay confidential.
  • Mutual NDA signed before drawings, models, study results or samples are exchanged
  • Files held on a restricted local server, access limited to the assigned engineer and programmer
  • Quotations, CMM sheets and weight records carry an internal project code, not your product name
  • No photograph, sample or reference of your link is released without written approval
  • Programmes, fixtures and the rib tool paths built for your job remain your property
  • Files and backups deleted at project close on request

The Plant

Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has machined custom parts since 2008. The floor runs 4-axis and 5-axis machining centres, turn-mill combination lathes, CNC lathes and milling machines, backed by an ISO 9001:2015 quality system, an in-house CMM room and ultrasonic thickness gauging. More than 200 customers in medical equipment, robotics, automotive, aerospace, automation, laser, LED, lithium battery and precision instruments are supplied from this plant, and 50-60% of output is exported. Thin-wall and thin-rib milling is standard work here.

FAQ

Q: Do we need to run a study before you can quote?
A: No. Send the load case, stiffness and mass targets with the envelope, and rib layout is proposed before quoting. If you already have a study, machine to it directly.

Q: How light can the part actually be?
A: Typically 40-50% lighter than the same envelope machined from solid, while holding the stiffness the load case requires. The exact figure comes from the rib layout, not from a promise.

Q: Will thin ribs chatter?
A: That is the main process risk and it is managed by leaving stock during roughing, relieving stress, then finishing ribs in one continuous pass with small cutters rather than many interrupted cuts.

Q: Will you sign an NDA before we share the load case?
A: A mutual NDA is signed first, covering drawings, models, study results and samples. Load data is treated as confidential as the geometry.

Q: What is the minimum order?
A: One piece, with no tooling charge and no programming fee.

Q: Can you match an existing part weight for a drop-in replacement?
A: Yes. State the target mass and we will adjust rib thickness within the drawing limits, then record the weight per part so the replacement stays consistent.

Q: What do you need to quote?
A: Drawing or model, load case or stiffness target, mass target, interfaces, quantity, coating and target date. Quote and rib notes return within 24 hours.
