An Angle Error Is a Lever

When two flange faces are parallel, a small angular error cancels out. When they sit at 45 degrees, the same error is multiplied by the distance to the tool. One hundredth of a degree across a 300 mm forearm moves the wrist by roughly half a millimetre, and no amount of calibration downstream can put that back.

So this part is not two flanges machined separately and bolted together through a block. Both flange faces, both pilot spigots and the transition body are cut in one 5-axis clamping sequence, with the angle probed on the machine before the faces are finished. The angle is a measured feature, not an assumption from the CAM file.

How the Angled Body Is Machined

Ten stages. The angle is probed and corrected at stage 6, before either face is finished, which is what separates a machined angle from an assembled one.

01Geometry review. Included angle, flange diameters, bolt circles, pilot spigots, offset distance and cable route are reviewed from your model or drawing; a DFM note on wall thickness at the junction follows within 24 hours.
02Billet selection. 6061-T6 block or bar is selected so the 45 degree faces can both be reached without a joint line; mill certificate and heat lot are recorded against your project code.
03Rough 5-axis milling. Both flange ends and the transition are roughed with allowance, and lightening pockets are cut now so the body relaxes before finishing.
04Stress relief and dwell. The blank is relieved and rested. An asymmetric body moves most when the thin side is machined last, so sequence matters here.
05Semi-finish both flanges on one datum. Both ends are brought close to size in the same clamping, leaving 0.2 mm on faces and spigots.
06Angle probe and compensation. A spindle probe measures the first face, the machine computes the true included angle, and the second face is corrected before final passes. This is the step that turns a nominal 45 degrees into a measured 45 degrees.
07Finish faces and spigots. Both faces, both spigots and the junction fillets are finished without unclamping, so flatness, spigot squareness and the included angle all come from one setup.
08Bolt circles and dowel holes. Counterbored holes and dowel holes are drilled and reamed from the same datum as the spigots, then deburred; dowel pairs are matched across the two flanges where the drawing calls for it.
09Cable path and relief cuts. Internal cable bore, exit window and clearance reliefs at the junction are cut at multi-angle orientations to keep wall thickness even.
10Anodize, CMM and marking. Clear or black anodize with spigots and dowel holes masked, angle and flatness measured on the CMM, serial and angle laser marked, faces protected for transit.

Why the angle is probed instead of trusted. Even a tight machine has thermal drift over a long cycle, and a 45 degree face cut 40 minutes apart from its partner inherits it. Probing the first face and correcting the second costs minutes per part and removes the error entirely, which is why we do it on every angled body rather than on the first one only.

Confidentiality

A joint angle and flange pattern describe your arm kinematics, so both are treated as customer property from the first message.
  • Mutual NDA signed before drawings, models, scans or samples are exchanged
  • Files held on a restricted local server, access limited to the assigned engineer and programmer
  • Quotations, CMM sheets and shipping labels carry an internal project code, not your product name
  • No photograph, sample or reference of your joint is released without written approval
  • Programmes, probe routines and fixtures built for your job remain your property
  • Files and backups deleted at project close on request

The Plant

Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has machined custom parts since 2008. The floor runs 4-axis and 5-axis machining centres with on-machine probing, turn-mill combination lathes, CNC lathes and milling machines, supported by an ISO 9001:2015 quality system and an in-house CMM room. More than 200 customers in medical equipment, robotics, automotive, aerospace, automation, laser, LED, lithium battery and precision instruments are supplied from this plant, and 50-60% of output is exported. Multi-angle flange work and probe-compensated machining are everyday jobs here.

FAQ

Q: Can the angle be something other than 45 degrees?
A: Yes. Anything from 15 to 90 degrees, including compound angles on two axes. Send the model and we will confirm reachability before quoting.

Q: How is the angle verified?
A: Probed on the machine before finishing, then measured on the CMM across both faces. The record ships with the parts.

Q: Will you sign an NDA before we share the arm drawing?
A: A mutual NDA is signed first, covering drawings, models, scans and samples.

Q: Can you keep several angled bodies matched to one another?
A: Yes. Bodies that form a matched chain are machined from the same programme with the angle measured against a common datum, and serials are recorded as a set.

Q: What is the minimum order?
A: One piece, with no tooling charge and no programming fee.

Q: Can the body carry a bearing seat as well?
A: Yes. Bearing seats are bored in the same clamping as the faces, so the seat stays square to the flange rather than being added in a second operation.

Q: What do you need to quote?
A: Drawing or model, included angle, flange and bolt circle sizes, offset distance, quantity, coating and target date. Quote and DFM notes return within 24 hours.
