Product Description
Detailed Specifications & Features

Bond and pin, not one or the other — socket fit held to 0.02 mm.

This arm tube insert joint is machined from 7075 aluminum and is both bonded and cross-pinned. It is designed for thin-wall carbon or aluminum arm segments. Drawings are released under mutual NDA.

The Hardest Interface in a Light Arm

A humanoid arm is only as stiff as the joint where its tube meets the aluminum fitting. Two common failures show up here. Glue alone holds until the bond line sees peel load in a fall or a collision, then it releases with no warning. A cross pin alone holds until the thin tube wall ovalises and the hole starts to grow under reversing load.

This fitting does both, deliberately. The tube is bonded over a controlled glue gap, and a hardened dowel is fitted through the assembly as a mechanical stop behind the bond. The pin also carries the peel load that adhesive is worst at, so the bond works in shear where it is strongest.

How the Joint Is Made

Ten stages. The bond surface and the pin holes are finished before anodize, and the socket is masked so coating never eats into the fit.

  1. Interface review. Tube outside diameter, wall thickness, insert depth, torque path and expected peel load are reviewed together; a DFM note with a recommended insert depth follows within 24 hours.
  2. Billet selection. 7075-T6 or 6061-T6 bar is selected against the load case, with mill certificate and heat lot recorded against your project code.
  3. Rough turning and milling. Socket, shoulder and flange ears are roughed with allowance; lightening pockets are milled at this stage so the part relaxes before finishing.
  4. Stress relief and dwell. The blank is relieved and rested, which is what keeps the socket round after the wall is thinned.
  5. Socket bored and finished in one clamping. Bore, shoulder stop face and outer diameter are finished in one setup, so fit and squareness come from the spindle rather than a re-chuck.
  6. Glue gap control features. Centring ribs and a controlled relief at the socket mouth set the bond line thickness and stop the adhesive being wiped off during insertion.
  7. Bond surface preparation. Grit blast to a defined roughness, then chromate conversion coat on the bond area only, which is what makes a structural adhesive grip aluminium long term.
  8. Cross pin and dowel holes. Holes are bored and reamed H7 through socket and tube witness line on the same datum as the bore, then deburred inside.
  9. Anodize with fit surfaces masked. Hard anodize on the outside, socket bore, bond area and pin holes masked so coating build-up cannot change the fit or the bond gap.
  10. Assembly trial, test and marking. Dummy tube inserted, pin engagement checked, prototype joints pull-out tested, serials laser marked, socket capped for transport.
Precision Capability
Characteristic Held To Verification
Socket to tube fit 0.02 mm diametral Bore gauge and plug gauge
Socket roundness 0.008 mm CMM, three sections
Socket to shoulder squareness 0.01 mm CMM, shoulder face
Cross pin hole to socket axis 0.01 mm CMM, both sides
Pin hole fit H7 reamed Pin gauge, every hole
Flange ear hole position 0.015 mm CMM, best fit
Bond surface roughness Ra 2.5–3.5 µm blasted Comparator and profilometer
Socket bore finish Ra 0.8 µm Roughness tester, per batch

Glue gap is a machined feature here, not a hope. The centring ribs and the socket mouth relief are cut to hold 0.10 mm of bond line, so a hand-assembled joint and a fixture-assembled joint end up with the same stiffness. If you bond in house, the same socket dimensions are supplied with a bond procedure and a cure schedule.

Custom Tube Joints

Joints are cut to the tube you actually use, including thin-wall carbon where crush damage is the main risk.

  • Materials: 7075-T6, 6061-T6, 6082-T6, 2024-T351, 304/316L stainless, titanium on request
  • Configurations: socket only, socket with flange, clevis ear joint, angled joint, in-line coupler, tapered transition
  • Retention: structural adhesive, cross dowel, radial set screws, split clamp collar, or a combination
  • Features: cable pass-through bore, sensor pocket, wire exit window, wrench flats, keyway, safety lanyard hole
  • Treatments: hard anodize, clear or black anodize, chromate on bond areas, masking on all fit surfaces
  • Input formats: STEP, IGES, X_T, DXF, 2D drawing with GD&T, or a tube sample for scanning and rebuild
Confidentiality

An arm joint drawing shows your kinematics and your tube supplier's dimensions, so both stay confidential.

  • Mutual NDA signed before drawings, models, scans or samples are exchanged
  • Files held on a restricted local server, access limited to the assigned engineer and programmer
  • Quotations, test records and shipping labels carry an internal project code, not your product name
  • No photograph, sample or reference of your joint is released without written approval
  • Programmes, bond fixtures and test rigs built for your job remain your property
  • Files and backups deleted at project close on request
The Plant

Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has machined custom parts since 2008. Equipment covers 4-axis and 5-axis machining centres, turn-mill combination lathes, CNC lathes and milling machines, backed by an ISO 9001:2015 quality system and an in-house CMM room with a roughness tester and bond-surface comparator. More than 200 customers in medical equipment, robotics, automotive, aerospace, automation, laser, LED, lithium battery and precision instruments are supplied from this plant, and 50–60% of output is exported. Thin-wall socket boring and bond surface preparation are routine work here.

FAQ
Q: Can the joint be bonded onto carbon fibre tube?

A: Yes, and that is the usual case. The socket fit, bond gap and surface preparation are set for the tube you specify, and a bond procedure ships with the parts.

Q: Why bond and pin instead of one method?

A: Adhesive is strongest in shear and weak in peel; a cross pin carries peel and gives a mechanical stop. Together they survive the load case that defeats either alone.

Q: Will you sign an NDA before we send the arm drawing?

A: A mutual NDA is signed first, covering drawings, models, scans, samples and tube dimensions.

Q: Can you supply the joint unbonded so we assemble in house?

A: Yes. Parts ship with the bond gap features, surface preparation and, on request, a fixture drawing and cure schedule.

Q: What is the minimum order?

A: One piece, with no tooling charge and no programming fee.

Q: How is pull-out strength verified?

A: On prototypes and on first-off samples of each lot: a bonded sample is pulled to failure and the peak load recorded against the drawing requirement.

Q: What do you need to quote?

A: Drawing or model, tube outside diameter and wall, insert depth, load case, quantity, coating and target date. Quote and DFM notes return within 24 hours.
