Rectangular Deep Cavity Electronic Housing Stepped Pocket Mirror Bored CNC Precision Machined 0.01mm
Stepped Pocket Mirror Bored Housing
,Sealing Groove Deep Cavity Enclosure
,Non-Standard Custom Machined Housing
This rectangular deep cavity electronic housing is machined from a solid 6061-T6 aluminum billet as a single piece, with a two-level stepped inner pocket, a machined gasket sealing groove around the pocket rim, two threaded M12 connector ports on the side wall and four countersunk cover mounting holes. The design is aimed at enclosures where a square or rectangular deep pocket, a repeatable sealing face and long-term dimensional stability matter more than sheet metal or die-cast construction can deliver. Every cavity and port is generated in one clamping setup on a 4-axis or 5-axis CNC machining center, so the pocket, the groove, the ports and the mounting holes share one datum instead of accumulating tolerance from several operations.
Process discipline, not just machine capability, is what keeps this housing repeatable from the first sample to the thousandth piece. The production route below is standard and can be tailored to your drawing and volume.
| Step | Operation and control point |
|---|---|
| 1. Material preparation | 6061-T6, 7075-T6, 6082-T6 or 5052 billet, cut oversize; mill certificate and heat number recorded against your job number. |
| 2. Stress relief | Pre-machining stress relief for deep pocket parts, so the pocket floor does not bow after the final finishing pass. |
| 3. Rough machining | High-efficiency roughing removes 70-80 percent of stock; allowances of 0.3-0.5mm are left on all functional faces and pocket walls. |
| 4. Semi-finishing | Corner radii, pocket steps and port bores brought to 0.05-0.1mm allowance; fixture re-clamped on the finished datum face. |
| 5. Finishing in one setup | Pocket walls, stepped floor, sealing groove, port bores and mounting holes finished in a single 4-axis or 5-axis clamping cycle for true position and squareness. |
| 6. Mirror boring and polishing | Pocket walls and floor bored and polished down to Ra 0.05-0.1um where a smooth, clean internal surface is required. |
| 7. Deburring and cleaning | Hand deburr on groove edges and port chamfers, ultrasonic cleaning, no residual chips in the deep pocket. |
| 8. Surface treatment | Clear or black anodizing (Type II), hard anodizing (Type III), chromate conversion, powder coating or conductive coating for EMI. |
| 9. Final inspection | CMM plus depth gauge, pin gauge and roughness tester, with SPC data recorded per lot and shipped with the parts. |
| Linear tolerance | +/-0.01mm on critical pocket and port dimensions; +/-0.05mm general |
| Pocket wall and floor flatness | 0.02mm (0.01mm on request after lapping) |
| Step height accuracy | +/-0.02mm between the two pocket levels |
| Port bore position | +/-0.02mm true position from the pocket datum |
| Sealing groove width and depth | +/-0.03mm, groove floor roughness Ra 0.4um or better |
| Mounting hole position | +/-0.05mm, countersink concentricity within 0.05mm |
| Perpendicularity and parallelism | 0.02mm on the pocket to the mounting face |
| Internal surface roughness | Ra 0.05-0.1um mirror finish; as-machined Ra 0.4-0.8um elsewhere |
Critical features are verified on a coordinate measuring machine against the CAD model, and key dimensions are charted so a trend can be spotted before it becomes a scrap part. Where a drawing calls for a tighter callout on a specific face, we confirm feasibility in the DFM review before quoting the tolerance.
Everything except the machining approach is open to your specification. Non-standard geometry is the normal case for us, not the exception.
- Body size and proportion from your 3D model, 2D drawing or sketch; we can also build the model from your component and interface requirements.
- Pocket type: rectangular, circular, square, stepped or multi-level, with pockets from 5mm shallow to 200mm deep.
- Ports and cutouts: M8 to M25 threaded ports, D-sub, USB, RJ45, HDMI, power jack, antenna, SIM and SD slots, ventilation slots.
- Sealing: gasket grooves, O-ring seats, stepped sealing faces, sealing land flatness specified to 0.02mm.
- Mounting and assembly features: counterbored, countersunk or threaded holes, bosses, ribs, wire routing channels, mating steps.
- Finish and appearance: mirror, brushed, bead blast, clear or colour anodizing, powder coating, laser marking of part numbers.
- Low minimum order: 1 piece for prototyping, then batch or serialized production from the same program.
Send a drawing or model and our engineering team returns DFM feedback, a realistic tolerance callout and a quote, usually within one to two working days. If a feature cannot be held economically, we propose an alternative that keeps function and lowers cost.
Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has been a custom CNC machining supplier since 2008, based in Dongguan, Guangdong, China. We run 4-axis and 5-axis CNC machining centers, turn-mill combined lathes, CNC lathes and milling machines, with about 100 staff including a dedicated programming and quality team. More than 200 customers are served in medical equipment, robotics, automotive, aerospace, automation, laser, LED, lithium battery and precision testing instruments, and 50-60 percent of output is exported. We are ISO 9001:2015 certified, with annual sales in the USD 10-20 million range and in-house inspection using CMM and optical measurement equipment. Deep pocket housings, mirror finished cavities and sealing faces are one of our long-standing specialities because the same capability is used for vacuum, optical and fluid handling parts.
- Monthly capacity above 10,000 pieces on this housing family, with capacity reserved for repeat customers.
- Typical lead time: 3-7 days for prototypes, 7-14 days for small batches of 10-100 pieces, 14-30 days for mass production.
- Programs, fixtures and tooling are kept on file after the first order, so repeat lots start without setup delay.
- SPC charts and a first-article inspection report travel with every lot, so incoming inspection at your end stays short.

How do you keep the pocket floor flat when machining a deep cavity?
Blank material is stress relieved before finishing, roughing leaves an even 0.3-0.5mm allowance, and the finishing pass is taken with light radial cuts and a re-clamp on the finished datum face. Pocket floor flatness is then verified on the CMM at 0.02mm; if a lapped face is required, 0.01mm is achievable.
Can you machine a non-standard shape that is not in your catalogue?
Yes. Non-standard work is the majority of our output. We work from your STEP model or 2D drawing, review it for manufacturability, propose tolerance and finish callouts, then machine a sample for your fit check. There is no tooling charge for CNC machined parts, so a design change between samples only affects programming time.
What is the minimum order quantity for a custom housing?
One piece for a prototype. Unit price drops at 10-100 pieces and again in the 100-1000 piece range. The same program and fixture are used across volumes, so the prototype you approve is the part you receive in production.
How is delivery kept stable on repeat orders?
Programs, fixtures, inspection plans and the approved sample are archived against your part number. Repeat lots are scheduled against the reserved capacity above 10,000 pieces per month, with SPC monitoring on critical dimensions and a first-article report per lot, so quality and timing do not drift between shipments.
Which surface finishes are available for a sealing cavity?
For sealing faces we normally recommend Ra 0.4um or better, with clear or hard anodizing where wear resistance matters, or chromate conversion and conductive coating where EMI shielding and electrical continuity are required. Mirror polishing to Ra 0.05um is available for pocket walls used with optical or fluid components.
