Aluminum CNC Machined Vacuum Chamber Plate with Precision Sealing Grooves

A vacuum chamber plate is judged by two things that a general machine shop rarely plans for: whether it seals, and whether it stays clean. Everything else — cavity depth, wall thickness, port locations — serves those two outcomes. Our cnc precision machining parts program for semiconductor and vacuum equipment is built around sealing surfaces, surface integrity and documented verification, because a chamber that leaks at installation costs far more than the part itself.
The sealing interface comes first
An O-ring groove is a controlled geometry, not a decorative channel. Groove width, depth, corner radius and surface finish all determine whether the elastomer compresses correctly. We machine grooves with dedicated tooling, verify depth across the full perimeter, and control the flatness of the flange that carries them. For metal-to-metal or gasket seals, flange flatness and surface roughness are treated as critical characteristics: a flange that is out of flat by a few hundredths of a millimetre will not seal reliably no matter how much torque is applied.
Cavity machining: depth, corners, wall uniformity
Deep rectangular cavities in aluminum plate are limited by tool reach and chip evacuation. We rough with adaptive paths that keep load constant, use relieved tooling for depth, and finish with small-diameter cutters to hold corner radii without hand work. Wall thickness is machined uniformly so thermal expansion and pump-down loads do not distort the cavity. Where a cavity has a thin floor, we sequence operations to support it during machining and finish the sealing face after the cavity is complete.
Surface finish and cleanliness for vacuum service
Internal surfaces in vacuum service trap particles and outgas if they are torn or smeared. We control finishing parameters to produce a consistent machined surface without smeared material, deburr all internal edges, and clean parts before packing to remove chips and cutting fluid residue. Where specified, we work to a defined surface roughness range and provide the measurement. Blind holes and internal channels are checked for chip retention before shipment — a detail that only matters to someone who has had to clean a chamber in a cleanroom.
Ports, hole patterns and assembly interfaces
Vacuum plates typically combine bolt circles, port faces, dowel holes and sensor mounting points, all related to a single datum. Cutting them in one set-up keeps position relationships intact; where a second set-up is unavoidable, the re-datum is planned and inspected. Threaded holes are checked for depth and perpendicularity, and counterbores for depth consistency, because a bolt that bottoms out is a leak path waiting to happen.
Verification before shipment
Inspection on these parts is not a final visual check. First-article inspection against the drawing, in-process checks after cavity and groove operations, and final dimensional verification with calibrated instruments are standard. Material certificates and dimensional reports are supplied when the customer's quality system requires them, and inspection records are matched to the drawing revision actually machined.
Prototype through batch
Development chambers are usually one-offs with tight deadlines; production chambers need repeatability. We run the prototype as a validation build, document the fixture and process, then lock parameters for repeat orders. That means the second and twentieth chamber are machined the same way as the approved first article, which is the only reliable way to keep sealing performance consistent across a program.
Materials and finishing
We machine 6061 and 5083 aluminum plate, 304 and 316L stainless steel, and 17-4PH where strength and corrosion resistance are both required. Finishing options include precision cleaning, passivation for stainless, bead blasting, chem-film and anodizing where the application permits it. For vacuum service we discuss coating choices with the customer, because some finishes are a contamination risk in high-vacuum systems.
About our factory
Our team builds precision metal components for B2B programs where a dimensional surprise is expensive. Every enquiry goes through a drawing and CAD review, a documented process route and a first-article verification step before batch release. We machine on 3-axis and 5-axis platforms, hold ±0.01 mm on production work, and cover finishing, inspection and packing so parts arrive ready to install. Capacity for repeat programs is planned in advance rather than squeezed into the queue, which is how we keep promised dates stable month after month.
