Product Description
Detailed Specifications & Features
Product Overview

Knurl first, thread last. 0.008 mm knurl-to-thread coaxiality, 6H threaded bore, machined in a single clamping with no re-chuck.

This thumb wheel screws directly onto a control shaft, so the thread is the datum and the knurl is the grip. When an operator turns the wheel, any runout between the knurled rim and the thread shows up as a wobble that the hand feels and the panel scale exaggerates. That is why the drawing specifies 0.008 mm knurl-to-thread coaxiality rather than a general tolerance.

The wheel is turned from 316L stainless bar and finished in one clamping: knurl, shoulder face, threaded bore and cross hole. 316L is specified where the wheel sits on equipment that is cleaned or exposed to coolant mist, because 303 will stain in that environment even when it machines more easily.

Manufacturing Route
  1. Thread and grip review. We confirm thread size and class, through or blind depth, knurl pitch, shoulder geometry and cross hole position, and check that the wall between thread and knurl root is thick enough, then quote within one working day.
  2. Material verification. 316L bar is checked against the mill certificate for grade and condition before cutting.
  3. Blank and knurl. The blank is turned under the finished diameter, then the straight knurl is formed with an axial feed at a rate matched to the pitch, so the teeth run parallel to the axis without a spiral drift.
  4. Shoulder and faces. The shoulder face and the two side faces are machined after knurling, because forming the knurl distorts a thin wheel and would leave the shoulder out of square.
  5. Threading last. The threaded bore is cut after the knurl with a thread mill or a full-form insert, so the forming pressure of the knurl cannot close the thread or ovalise it. Thread depth is controlled and gauged against a plug gauge.
  6. Cross hole. The cross hole is drilled with live tooling in the same clamping, so it is clocked to the knurl seam and to the shoulder face.
  7. Deburr and passivation. Knurl crests are brushed, thread start is chamfered and deburred, then the part is passivated, rinsed and dried.
  8. Inspection. Plug gauge for the 6H thread, CMM for coaxiality between the knurl OD and the thread axis, runout check on the rim, and a first article report with the batch.

Knurl First, Thread Last

Knurling pushes metal sideways. On a thumb wheel the thread sits only a few millimetres inside the knurled rim, so a thread cut before knurling arrives at inspection undersized or slightly oval, and the wheel binds on the shaft at one point of each revolution. Turning the sequence around — knurl then thread — removes that failure entirely.

The same logic explains why the shoulder face is finished after the knurl. A wheel that seats on a shoulder which is 0.03 mm out of square tightens against the shaft at an angle, and the operator reads that as a thread problem. Every one of these ordering decisions is taken at the process planning stage, and the inspection plan is written to match, so what the CMM measures is the geometry the customer actually assembles.

Custom Options

Thread size and class, blind or through bore, knurl pitch and length, shoulder geometry, cross hole, material grade and finish are all built to your drawing. One piece is a normal order with no tooling charge and no setup fee, and the prototype goes through the same gauge and CMM plan as production. If the thread leaves too little wall under the knurl root, our engineer returns a DFM note before cutting.

Confidentiality
  • NDA before files. Mutual non-disclosure is signed before drawings or samples are released.
  • No public reference. Confidential wheels never appear in samples, catalogues, website photos or trade fairs.
  • Separated cell. Sensitive work runs with named operators and project-coded programmes.
  • Partner control. Passivation suppliers receive process specifications only.
Company Introduction

Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has produced turned and milled parts since 2008, operating turn-mill centres, CNC lathes with live tooling and four-axis and five-axis machining centres. The company employs 90 to 102 people, holds ISO 9001:2015 certification, serves more than 200 customers, exports 50 to 60 percent of output and records annual sales of USD 10 to 20 million.

Delivery Stability
  • Confirmed dates. Prototypes 4 to 7 working days, batch orders 12 to 18 working days after drawing approval.
  • Repeat orders skip setup. Programmes, knurl tools, thread gauges and fixtures stay on file.
  • Reserved machine time. Blanket orders are scheduled into fixed monthly slots.
  • Early warning. If material, knurl tooling or passivation threatens the date, you hear it before it is missed.
  • Dispatch evidence. Photos, inspection report and packing list before shipment.

Packing

Each wheel is bagged, threaded onto a protective mandrel or seated in a foam tray with the thread clear of the tray wall, then sealed in a moisture barrier bag with desiccant. Trays fit a five-layer export carton marked with part number, quantity and batch code. Sea freight ships on fumigation-free plywood pallets; neutral cartons are available.

FAQ
Why is the thread cut after knurling?

Because knurling displaces material and can close or ovalise a thread cut first, which makes the wheel bind on the shaft at one point per turn.

Can you supply left-hand threads?

Yes, left-hand threads are cut on the same equipment. Mark the direction on the drawing and we will gauge accordingly.

Is the cross hole clocked to the knurl?

It is drilled in the same clamping, so its angular position repeats from part to part. If it must align with a specific tooth, mark the requirement on the drawing.

Do you sign an NDA?

Yes, before files are released, and confidential parts are excluded from samples and photos.

What is the minimum order?

One piece, with no tooling charge and no setup fee.

Send the drawing with thread class, knurl pitch and shoulder geometry, and we will reply with a DFM review, a quotation and a confirmed delivery date within one working day.
