Pocketed mounting plates with material removed from the back — without turning the front face into a dish. Ribbed back, inserts fitted, flatness held at 0.01 mm.
Lightening pockets on the back of a mounting plate are the standard way to cut mass from a moving axis or a gantry. They are also the standard way to ruin the front face: once 60% of the material is removed from one side, the residual stress in the plate is unbalanced, and the flat face you machined becomes a dish. Bolt it down flat and it pulls the mating part with it; leave it free and it rocks.
We machine these plates so the balance is kept: the front face is semi-finished, pockets are cut with a roughing and a finishing pass, ribs are left at the design width rather than thinned by tool deflection, the front face is finished last against the finished pocket structure, and the floor thickness under each pocket is checked ultrasonically. Inserts and helicoils go in after pocketing, so the thread is not cut into a wall that later moves.
| Stage | Operation | Why it is controlled this way |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Stock and stress relief | 6061-T6 or 7075-T651 plate sawn oversize; stress relieved before pocketing so movement happens before the finish pass. |
| 2 | Face one side and datum | Datum face semi-finished and marked; the final front face is deliberately left oversize until the pockets exist. |
| 3 | Turn or profile outside | Outside profile turned or milled true to the datum, with handling lugs left where the plate is thin. |
| 4 | Rough pockets | Pockets roughed with a larger tool at a conservative step-over, leaving ribs at design width and stock on the floor. |
| 5 | Finish pockets and ribs | Pocket floors and rib walls finished; rib width checked because tool deflection thins ribs invisibly. |
| 6 | Finish front face last | Front face finished after the pockets, so the flat face is generated against the final stiffness of the part. |
| 7 | Inserts and holes | Helicoils or threaded inserts installed and checked for depth and thread class; dowel and bolt holes reamed in the final setup. |
| 8 | Verify and coat | Ultrasonic floor thickness, free-state flatness and position checked, then anodised with sizing compensation and re-measured. |
| Feature | Held to | Verified by |
|---|---|---|
| Front face flatness (free state) | 0.01 mm | CMM, plate released and supported |
| Pocket floor thickness | ±0.02 mm | Ultrasonic at four points per pocket |
| Pocket depth | ±0.03 mm | Depth gauge and CMM |
| Rib width | ±0.05 mm | CMM and calliper |
| Face parallelism | 0.01 mm | Micrometer plus CMM |
| Hole and insert position | ±0.02 mm true position | CMM |
| Insert thread class | 6H, checked 100% | Thread plug gauge |
| Outline profile | ±0.05 mm | CMM |
| Plate thickness overall | ±0.02 mm | Micrometer, five points |
| Coating thickness | Per specification, recorded | Coating gauge, sample |
Pocket floor thickness is measured by ultrasound because a calliper cannot reach it and a depth gauge only tells you what the tool did, not what is left. A floor that is 0.1 mm thin under a mounting bolt is a crack waiting for the first torque cycle.

A pocketed plate drawing shows a bolt pattern, a mass target and often the machine axis it rides on — that is enough to describe a moving assembly. We sign a mutual NDA before any file is opened, in English or Chinese or on your own form, and return a countersigned copy before work starts. Access is limited to the project engineer, the programmer and the cell supervisor, with the file in a restricted folder rather than the open shop network. No photographs of customer parts are taken for our catalogue or website, customer parts are never displayed or reused as samples, subcontracting requires your written approval, and at program close files and inspection data are deleted or returned with written confirmation.
Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has been machining custom parts since 2008: 15+ years, 90 to 100 staff, 50–60% exported to North America and Europe, 200+ customers served, turnover in the RMB 10–20 million band. The floor holds CNC lathes, turn-mill combined centres with live tooling and sub-spindle, and 4-axis / 5-axis machining centres under an ISO 9001:2015 system, producing parts for automation, robotics, automotive, aerospace, medical, laser, LED, lithium battery and precision instrument programs. Pocket milling, insert installation, ultrasonic thickness checking and CMM inspection are managed in our own plant in Dongguan.
Lightweight pocketed plates from this plant ship into ten industries. Each line is a category we machine regularly, with the parts customers actually order.

All ten sectors run through the same plant and the same ISO 9001:2015 inspection discipline — only the material, finish and documentation package change.
- Prototype: 4–8 working days after drawing approval including anodising.
- Small batch 10–100 pcs: 8–15 working days.
- Repeat orders: run from archived programs and fixtures; pocket depth, rib width and flatness repeat to the same values.
- Capacity: 10,000 pieces per month across the plant.
- Visibility: a dated progress note with photographs of your actual plates at pocketing, insert fitting and measurement.
- Shipping: plates separated by foam, faces filmed, cartons marked so a thin pocketed plate is not crushed by stacking.
- Rush: anodising and insert-fitting slots held weekly; tell us the deadline and we confirm before you order.
By leaving the front face oversize until the pockets exist, finishing it last against the finished structure, and checking flatness with the plate released. Finishing the face first and then removing 60% of the material from the back is how a flat plate becomes a dish.
Down to 1 mm on aluminium where the pocket is supported by ribs, and we confirm the realistic value for your geometry before quoting. The floor is checked ultrasonically at several points because that is the only way to know what material is left in the middle of a pocket.
After pocketing and before final verification; inserts are masked or fitted after coating depending on the type, and the thread class is checked 100% either way. Cutting a thread into a wall that later moves is how inserts come loose.
Yes, by roughly 10 to 25 microns per surface depending on process and alloy, so pocket and bore sizes are compensated before coating and re-measured after. You receive post-coating numbers.
One piece, no tooling charge. Price follows plate size, pocket count and depth, rib layout, insert count and finish; a written quotation normally returns within 24 hours.
Yes. NDA signed and countersigned before the file is opened, access limited to the engineer, programmer and supervisor, no photographs of customer parts, nothing published without written permission.
Attach the drawing or model with the quantity, the mass target, the insert schedule and the deadline; you will get a quotation, a pocketing and finishing plan, and a firm delivery date. NDA paperwork can be dealt with in the same exchange.
