Hex Adapter — Flats, Cross Port and Thread Relief in One Turn-Mill Setup
An adapter with hex flats and a cross port performs three jobs at once: it seals on a thread at each end, gives a wrench something to grip without crushing the thread, and lets fluid or air out through the side. Each function lives in a different machining operation, and each one can spoil the others — flats milled after threading can burr the thread crest; a cross port drilled after passivation drags chips into the bore; a relief groove cut too shallow stops the mating part before the seal seats.
We cut the threads with a proper relief groove, mill the hex and cross port with live tooling on the same lathe while the part is still held on its axis, and deburr the port intersection from inside before the part is released. The hex is measured across flats, the port position and clocking are checked on the CMM, and the assembly is pressure tested where the customer requests it.
| Stage | Operation | Control Point |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bar and certificate | 303, 304, 316L or brass bar, with mill certificate traceable to heat number. |
| 2 | Turn OD and faces | Body diameters, shoulders and O-ring groove turned; groove depth and width checked against the seal call-out. |
| 3 | Thread relief and threading | Relief groove cut to the drawing before threading, then threads cut and gauged; no thread runs into a shoulder without relief. |
| 4 | Hex milling | Hex flats milled with live tooling in the same setup, across-flats held and flats clocked to the port direction. |
| 5 | Cross port | Port spot faced, drilled and tapped square to the flat; breakthrough verified and the inner intersection deburred with a controlled tool. |
| 6 | Bore finish | Through bore or blind bore finished, chip-free, before the part leaves the machine. |
| 7 | Passivate and protect | Passivation per ASTM A967, threads masked as required, ports protected with plugs. |
| 8 | Inspection and pack | Threads gauged 100%, hex and port measured, CMM report, pressure test record where requested. |

An adapter drawing reveals circuit layout, port sizes and test pressures — enough to describe a system, not just a fitting. We sign a mutual NDA before the file is opened, in English or Chinese or on your own form, and return a countersigned copy before work starts. Only the project engineer, the turn-mill programmer and the cell supervisor can access the file, which is held in a restricted folder rather than on the shop network. No photographs of customer parts are taken for our catalogue or website, customer parts are never displayed or reused as samples, subcontracting requires your written approval, and at program close files and inspection data are deleted or returned with written confirmation.
Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has been machining custom parts since 2008: 15+ years, 90 to 100 staff, 50–60% exported to North America and Europe, 200+ customers served, turnover in the RMB 10–20 million band. The plant runs turn-mill combined centres with live tooling, CNC lathes, and 4-axis / 5-axis machining centres under an ISO 9001:2015 quality system, serving medical, robotics, automotive, aerospace, automation, laser, LED, lithium battery and precision instrument programs. Turning, hex milling, cross porting, passivation coordination and pressure testing are handled in our own plant in Dongguan.
Adapters and turned fittings from this plant ship into ten industries. Each line is a category we machine regularly, with the parts customers actually order.
| Industry | Typical Parts We Machine |
|---|---|
| Consumer electronics | Phone, tablet and laptop housings / heat spreaders / camera brackets / VR and AR headset structural parts / smart wearable enclosures |
| Automation and industrial equipment | Automation jigs and fixtures / module frames / linear guide blocks / motor mounts / sensor housings / conveyor line components |
| Semiconductor and vacuum | Vacuum chamber bodies / vacuum fittings / precision bases for semiconductor equipment / thermal and insulating parts / inspection tooling |
| Medical equipment | Surgical instrument bases / medical instrument housings / endoscope components / aesthetic device structural parts (medical grade aluminium and stainless) |
| Automotive | New energy motor housings / battery end plates / sensor brackets / lighting structural parts / retrofit components / hydraulic valve blocks |
| Aerospace and UAV | Aircraft structural parts / UAV frames / landing gear components / avionics instrument housings (lightweight precision parts) |
| Optics and photonics | Optical lens barrels / lens mounts / light source heat sinks / camera module brackets / inspection optical platforms |
| Telecom | 5G heat dissipation cavities / filter components / signal adapter structural parts / telecom equipment enclosures |
| Robotics | Robot arm joint parts / robot bases / reducer housings / AGV structural components |
| Instrumentation | Test equipment housings / precision gauge bases / flow meter components / laboratory equipment parts |
All ten sectors run through the same plant and the same ISO 9001:2015 inspection discipline — only the material, finish and documentation package change.
- Prototype: 3–7 working days after drawing approval including passivation and gauging; 8–10 days with a pressure test package.
- Small batch 10–100 pcs: 7–14 working days.
- Repeat orders: run from archived programs, collets and thread tool lists — hex clocking and thread class repeat to the same values.
- Capacity: 10,000 pieces per month across the plant.
- Visibility: a dated progress note with photographs of your actual adapters at turning, porting and gauging.
- Shipping: threads capped, ports plugged, parts bagged, foam-lined export carton, express or air and sea per your forwarder.
- Rush: overtime slots and an express passivation line held weekly; tell us the deadline and we confirm before you order.
A: After the threads are cut, with the part still held on its axis and the hex clocked to the port direction. Milling the hex last on a separate fixture is what burrs thread crests and loses the clocking; doing it on the same machine avoids both problems.
A: Without relief the mating part bottoms on an unfinished shoulder instead of on the sealing face, so the joint leaks no matter how tight it is. The groove lets the thread run out cleanly and the shoulder do the sealing, and its width is measured on the CMM rather than assumed from the tool.
A: The port is drilled and tapped before the bore is finished, the breakthrough is deburred from inside with a controlled tool, and the bore is then flushed and inspected with a borescope. Ports and threads are plugged before passivation and packing.
A: Yes, as a quoted option. We cap the ends, hold the part at your test pressure (typically 1.5 times working pressure), record the decay and ship the certificate with the delivery.
A: One piece, no tooling charge. Price follows material, thread combination, body style, port count and finish; a written quotation normally returns within 24 hours.
A: Yes. NDA signed and countersigned before the file is opened, access limited to the engineer, programmer and supervisor, no photographs of customer parts, nothing published without written permission.
Attach the drawing or model with the quantity, the working pressure and the deadline, and you will get a quotation, the process route including porting and passivation, and a firm delivery date. NDA paperwork can be dealt with in the same exchange.
