Thin Wall Grip Sleeve — Turn-Mill Cell, Diamond Knurl, 0.8 mm Wall Minimum. A precision-machined sleeve engineered for grip and true rotation, produced in a single setup on turn-mill combined centres.
Diamond knurled grip sleeves sit between a polished shaft and a human hand, or between a rotating knob and a moulded housing. The knurl has to feel sharp enough to grip, blunt enough not to cut, and consistent from the first part to the thousandth. The bore has to spin true, because a sleeve that is 0.03 mm off centre turns a smooth control into a wobbling one.
We turn and knurl these sleeves on turn-mill combined centres, which means the knurl band, the bore, the shoulder, the cross hole or the engraved marking are all produced without re-chucking the part. Thin walls stay round because the part is never released and re-gripped between the operations that define its geometry.
| Stage | What We Do | Why It Matters Here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bar selection and cut, material cert matched | Wall thickness decides material: 303 for fine diamond knurl, 316 where corrosion or cleaning matters. |
| 2 | Rough turn OD and pre-bore, leaving knurl allowance | Knurl displaces metal; the allowance keeps the crest circle at drawing size after forming. |
| 3 | Diamond knurling with matched wheel pair | Speed and feed per alloy; the crossing pattern is checked visually and by crest diameter on the first part. |
| 4 | Finish bore and shoulder in the same setup | Bore is cut after knurling so displacement cannot touch the fit surface, and concentricity stays within 0.01 mm. |
| 5 | Milled features: slot, flat, cross hole, engraving | Sub-spindle milling on the same machine, so the feature clocking relative to the knurl is repeatable. |
| 6 | Deburr, edge break and surface finish | Knurl ends rounded to a comfortable radius; bead blast, brush or passivation per drawing. |
| 7 | Mandrel inspection and packing | Concentricity, wall thickness, crest diameter and bore recorded on the report shipped with the parts. |
| Dimension | Held To | Verified By |

| Bore diameter | ±0.01 mm | Air gauge or bore micrometer |
| Concentricity bore / knurl crest | 0.01 mm | CMM on mandrel |
| Wall thickness | ±0.03 mm | Ultrasonic gauge, section cut per batch |
| Circularity of bore | 0.01 mm | CMM roundness scan |
| Shoulder face runout | 0.01 mm | Granite plate plus indicator |
| Length and shoulder position | ±0.05 mm | Height gauge |
| Knurl crest diameter | ±0.05 mm | Micrometer over crests, 3 positions |

- Pattern freedom: diamond knurl, straight knurl, spiral or interrupted knurl band, half-knurled sleeve with a smooth finger land.
- Wall range: 0.8 mm to 6 mm, with reduced-pressure knurling and a sample section cut for anything under 1.5 mm.
- Fit: slip fit, light press, H7, or a fit defined by your shaft tolerance — we work to your numbers, not to a catalogue.
- Add-on features: shoulder, flange, external thread, internal thread, cross hole, slot for a grub screw, flat for a wrench, laser marking.
- Materials: 303, 304, 316L, 416, 17-4PH, brass, 6061 and 7075 aluminium, plus black oxide or anodised aluminium versions.
- Length: 8 mm to 250 mm; diameter 5 mm to 90 mm.
- Reverse engineering: send a worn or damaged original, we scan it, send the model for approval, then machine.
Grip sleeves usually carry the shape language of a product line, which makes the drawing commercially sensitive. We sign a mutual NDA before the file is opened, in English or Chinese, and your own form is fine. Only the project engineer, the programmer and the cell supervisor can open the file.
The knurling cell is a camera-free area: no photographs, no video, no social posts, and no sample sleeve left on a shelf where a visitor could see it. We do not publish customer parts, logos or program names without written permission, subcontracting requires your written approval, and files plus inspection data are deleted or returned at program close with written confirmation.
Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has been machining custom parts since 2008: 15+ years, 90 to 100 staff, 50–60% of output exported to North America and Europe, more than 200 customers served, turnover in the RMB 10–20 million band.
The floor holds CNC lathes, turn-mill combined centres and 4-axis / 5-axis machining centres under an ISO 9001:2015 system, producing parts for medical equipment, robotics, automotive, aerospace, automation, laser, LED, lithium battery and precision instrument programs. Everything on this page — turning, knurling, milling, finishing, inspection — happens in our own plant, which is why we can promise a date rather than a range.
- Prototype: 3–7 working days, including a knurl sample for approval where the pattern is new.
- Small batch 10–100 pcs: 7–14 working days in a reserved cell slot.
- Repeat orders: run from archived programs and knurl wheels; no re-programming, no re-fixturing.
- Capacity: 10,000 pieces per month across the plant.
- Visibility: a dated progress note with photographs of your actual parts at each stage.
- Shipping: bagged individually, foam-lined export carton, express or air and sea freight per your forwarder.
- Rush: weekly overtime slots reserved for urgent prototype and line-down cases; tell us the required date first.
A: 0.8 mm is our practical floor on stainless in a 1.0 mm pitch diamond knurl, and 1.0 mm is safer where the sleeve is also press-fitted. Below that we reduce knurl pressure, knurl before the bore is finished, and cut a sample section from every batch to prove the wall and bore are still true.
A: Crest height, pitch and edge break. A 0.5–0.8 mm pitch with a light edge radius feels positive without biting; a coarser 1.0–1.5 mm pitch grips better through a glove but wears a bare hand. We keep crest height controlled by the blank diameter rather than by pressing harder, and we round the knurl ends so the sleeve has no sharp rim.
A: Yes. Because the milling is done on the same turn-mill setup as the knurl, the hole position relative to the pattern is repeatable batch to batch — typically within ±1° of the drawing datum. On a lathe with re-chucking that angle usually drifts.
A: The sleeve is mounted on a precision mandrel with a light interference fit, then swept on the CMM and with a dial indicator. Measuring a thin wall in a chuck would distort it and give a false reading, so the mandrel method is written into the inspection plan.
A: One piece, with no tooling charge for standard knurl patterns. Send the drawing or model with the quantity and required date; a written quotation normally returns within 24 hours, including knurl pattern and material recommendation if the drawing leaves those open.
A: Yes to both. NDA first, countersigned copy returned before work starts; no photographs of customer parts are taken for our catalogue or website, and nothing about your program appears in our marketing without written permission.
Attach the model or drawing with the quantity and the date you need the sleeves, and you will get a quotation, a process route and a firm delivery date. Knurl pattern recommendations and NDA paperwork can be handled in the same exchange.
