Thin-wall joint housing, helical slot pattern, 0.006 mm bore concentricity

What This Part Does

This joint housing carries the reducer and bearing stack of a robot articulation. The body is turned from 6061 aluminum plate as a thin cylinder, the weight-reduction slots are milled on a helix so they follow the load path instead of cutting across it, and the flange bolt circle, bore seat and mounting lugs are produced without releasing the part from the chuck. Wall sections are kept to 1.2-3 mm where the drawing allows, which pulls mass out of the moving joint while keeping hoop stiffness.

It suits designs that a standard pillow-block or catalogue housing cannot serve: an off-centre bore, an asymmetric lug pattern, an encoder window, a cable channel, or an oil-seal groove all sit inside the same envelope and are cut in the same operation.

Manufacturing Route

The route below is what we actually run for this housing family. Each stage exists to protect a dimension that would otherwise move later in the process.

Stage 01 — Drawing and process reviewWall thickness, slot width to depth ratio, tool overhang and anodize growth are reviewed; a written DFM note with cycle estimate goes back inside 24 hours.
Stage 02 — Blank preparation and stressing6061 plate is cut oversize, stress-relieved by controlled heating, then faced both sides; heat lot and mill certificate are filed against your project code.
Stage 03 — Turn-mill roughing in one clampingOD, bore, flange and lug stock are roughed on a turn-mill centre so the bore axis and the flange face share one setup from the start.
Stage 04 — Relaxation dwellThe part rests before finishing. Thin-wall housings move most in this window, which is why the finishing pass is deliberately separated from roughing.
Stage 05 — Helical slot millingSlots are cut with a reduced radial step-over on a helical path, entering and exiting on a radius so no stress riser is left at the slot end.
Stage 06 — Finish bore and flange, still one clampingBearing seat, seal groove, flange face and bolt circle are finished without re-chucking; concentricity comes from the machine, not from a second fixture.
Stage 07 — In-process probingBore diameter and flange runout are probed on the machine and offsets applied before the part leaves the spindle.
Stage 08 — Deburr and edge break0.2-0.3 mm edge break on every slot and bore entry, done on the machine where possible to avoid hand blending.
Stage 09 — Surface treatmentClear or black anodize, hard anodize 25-40 µm, sandblast or chromate, with bores and seal grooves masked when specified.
Stage 10 — CMM and documentationFull GD&T run on the CMM, first article report plus per-batch dimensional sheet, material certificate and treatment record shipped with the parts.

These are process capabilities, not catalogue claims. If your drawing asks for something tighter than the route above can hold reliably, we say so before quoting and propose an alternative process instead of accepting an order we cannot repeat.

Custom and Non-Standard Work

Every housing we ship is a one-off drawing made repeatable. Nothing here is limited to a catalogue size.

  • Outer diameter 60-400 mm, bore 10-250 mm, overall length up to 300 mm
  • Slot patterns: helical, axial, radial, crossed or customer-defined, with slot width from 3 mm
  • Materials: 6061-T6, 6082-T6, 7075-T6, 2024-T351, 304/316L stainless, 4140, titanium on request
  • Integrated features: encoder windows, cable channels, seal grooves, oil ports, keyways, heli-coils, dowel pin holes, laser marking
  • Accepted input: STEP, IGES, X_T, STL, DXF, 2D drawing with GD&T, or a physical sample for 3D scanning and model rebuild
  • Assembly support: matched housing and cover sets, bearing press-fit trials, first article fit check before mass production

Confidentiality

Design files are treated as your property, not as our reference material. A mutual NDA is signed before the first file exchange. Drawings and models are stored on a restricted server, reachable only by the engineer and programmer assigned to your code, and are not placed in shared folders. Quotations, inspection sheets and shipping documents carry an internal project code rather than your product name. No photo or sample of your part leaves the plant without written approval, and tooling, fixtures and NC programs built for your job stay yours. Files are deleted at project close on request.

About the Plant

Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd has machined custom metal components since 2008. The floor runs 4-axis and 5-axis machining centres, turn-mill combination lathes, CNC lathes and milling machines, with an ISO 9001:2015 quality system and an in-house CMM room. More than 200 customers in medical equipment, robotics, automotive, aerospace, automation, laser, LED, lithium battery and precision instruments are supplied from this site, and 50-60% of output is exported. Engineering support, programming and inspection sit in the same building as the machines, so a drawing question is answered the same day it is asked.

FAQ

Q: Can we start with one prototype before committing to a batch?
A: Yes. One piece is a normal order, with no tooling or programming charge, and the same program is reused when you scale up.

Q: Will you sign our NDA before we release drawings?
A: We sign a mutual NDA first, and the same applies to RFQ models, scans and physical samples. Use your form or ours.

Q: How do you keep a thin-wall housing from distorting after machining?
A: Stress-relieved blank, roughing separated from finishing by a relaxation dwell, reduced step-over on slot milling, and light finishing passes. Distortion is controlled in the route, not corrected afterwards.

Q: Which bearing fits can you machine?
A: H7 and G7 seats for harmonic drives, RV reducers, planetary gearboxes, crossed roller and standard ball bearings, with seal grooves and retaining features on the same setup.

Q: What information do you need for a quote?
A: 2D drawing with tolerances, 3D model, quantity per batch, material, surface treatment and target date. Reply within 24 hours including process observations.

Q: How is delivery kept stable on repeat orders?
A: Frozen program and fixture, capacity reserved per part number, two-machine allocation, buffer WIP, and a weekly progress report on every open order.
