ISO 9001:2015 · 4-axis / 5-axis and turn-mill capacity · First article report with every shipment · Exporting since 2008

Dongguan Changxinda Precision Technology Co., Ltd. has machined custom parts to drawing since 2008. The plant runs 4-axis and 5-axis machining centers, turn-mill combined lathes and precision CNC lathes, employs more than 90 people, and exports 50 to 60 percent of output to industrial buyers in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia. ISO 9001:2015 certified, first article reports with ballooned drawings as standard.

A prototype enclosure is the part where a new product either proves itself or stalls. The design is not frozen yet, the electronics inside may still move, and the schedule is measured in days rather than weeks. This page describes how a one off aluminum enclosure moves from a STEP file to a machined, anodized and inspected part without tooling charge and without a minimum order quantity.

Route From Drawing To First Article

The route below is what happens to a single enclosure ordered today, not a brochure sequence.

  • Day 0, DFM review: the STEP file is opened, wall thickness, corner radii, tool reach and datum scheme are checked, and a short report comes back with anything that would raise cost or risk.
  • Day 1, stock and setup: 6061-T6 plate is cut oversize, soft jaws are bored to the blank, and the first operation is planned from the face that the electronics will sit on.
  • Day 2 to 3, five axis machining: pocket, window, connector cut outs and mounting bosses are cut in one clamping where geometry allows, with the part rotated in the trunnion instead of being re-chucked.
  • Day 4, deburr and finish: edges are chamfered in the program, threads are checked with go and no go gauges, then the part goes for anodizing or stays as machined, as specified.
  • Day 5, inspection and packing: critical dimensions are measured against the ballooned drawing, photos of the finished part are sent, and the part ships in foam.

Why Five Axis For A Single Part

On a low volume enclosure the cost of a second operation usually exceeds the cost of the extra axis time, because every re-chuck needs a new fixture, a new datum and a new inspection.

  • Angled connector faces and drafted walls are cut without tilting the part by hand
  • Internal pockets and external profiles share one datum, so wall thickness stays uniform around the box
  • Deep pockets are reached with a relieved neck tool, keeping the bottom corner radius close to the drawing
  • Thin walls down to 1.2 mm are supported by the fixture rather than by clamping pressure, which avoids the spring back that shows up after the part is released
  • Tool paths are rest machined, so a small cutter only cuts where the large cutter could not reach

Tolerances A Prototype Can Hold

The declared capability for prototype enclosures is 0.01 mm on machined datum faces, 0.02 mm on pocket depth, 0.01 mm on hole position referenced to the primary datum, and 0.05 mm on overall outside dimensions.

  • Flatness on the sealing face measured on a granite plate, reported as a value rather than a pass or fail
  • Wall thickness checked with an ultrasonic gauge at marked points on the drawing
  • Hole position verified as true position on the CMM, not as centre distance between two holes
  • Surface roughness Ra 1.6 as machined, Ra 0.8 available on request
  • Thread depth and class checked with gauges after anodizing, since coating changes the minor diameter

Custom Options On A One Off Order

  • Materials: 6061-T6 and 7075-T6 aluminum, 304 and 316L stainless, brass, copper, POM and PEEK for non metallic prototypes
  • Finishes: clear anodizing, black anodizing, hard anodizing, bead blasting, brushed, laser marking of logos and serial numbers
  • Enclosure sizes from 40 mm to 500 mm in the longest dimension, wall thickness from 1.2 mm
  • Laser cut gaskets, embedded standoffs, threaded inserts and dowel pins fitted before shipping
  • Design feedback loop: two revision rounds included, each returned within 24 hours of the new model
  • Quantity ramp from 1 piece to 500 pieces without changing the process, so the prototype and the batch come off the same route

Lead Time And Volume Ramp

Prototype lead time is quoted from the process route, and the same process is kept when the project moves to production.

  • 1 to 10 pieces: 3 to 7 working days including anodizing and first article inspection
  • 10 to 100 pieces: 7 to 12 working days, fixture already proven from the prototype run
  • Above 100 pieces: reserved machine capacity with a fixed weekly release
  • Weekly status update with photographs of work in progress, and written notice at least 5 working days before any slip
  • Shipping by express, air or sea, door to door, with commercial invoice and packing list prepared for customs

Questions From Product Teams

Do you charge tooling for a prototype enclosure?

No. Machined prototypes need soft jaws and a program, both of which are included in the piece price. There is no tooling charge and no minimum quantity.

My design is not finished, can you start anyway?

Yes. Many customers start with the PCB outline and the connector positions fixed and leave the rest open. We machine the first article, you test the fit, and the model is revised before the next run.

Can the prototype and the production batch look identical?

They can, because the production parts use the same machining route and the same anodizing supplier. If you later move to die casting or extrusion, we will flag the visible differences in the DFM report.
