Robot Base Plate 6061 Aluminum 0.02mm Flatness CMM Verified 0.01mm Repeatability
Robot Base Mounting Plate
,0.02mm Flatness Mounting Plate
,CMM Verified Base Plate
A robot base plate is the datum the whole arm is built from. If the mounting face is not flat, or the anchor hole pattern is not square, every axis above it inherits the error. We machine base plates from 6061-T6 plate, hold the top face flat within 0.02 mm after release from the fixture, and position the anchor and dowel holes within ±0.01 mm of each other.
Because the plate is large and thin relative to its footprint, clamping distortion rather than cutter accuracy is what usually ruins it. We machine it on a stress-relieved blank with support under the full footprint, then check flatness again after the clamps come off.
Production Sequence
- 1Plate selection. Plate thickness is specified with allowance for face milling on both sides and for stress relief where the design allows.
- 2Face and edge machining. Both faces milled parallel, edges squared, outside profile cut with generous stock left for the finishing pass.
- 3Hole pattern generation. Anchor holes, dowel holes, cable pass-throughs and counterbores are drilled, bored and reamed in one clamping so the pattern stays square to the datum edges.
- 4Pocketing and rib work. Lightening pockets are cut symmetrically to keep the plate balanced and to avoid warping when the top skin is removed.
- 5Release check. Flatness re-measured after unclamping, then deburr, clean and anodize if required.
Why the Inspection Is Stricter Than the Drawing
A base plate can pass every single dimension and still be unusable if flatness is measured while it is still clamped. We measure after release, on a surface plate, with the plate resting on three points. Hole position is verified as a pattern against the datum edges, and dowel holes are checked for size and roundness with a bore gauge as well as the CMM.
Inspection data is filed per serial or per batch, so if a customer later finds a mounting issue we can trace the exact measurement that was recorded before shipment.
Release and Delivery Discipline
- Dimensional report plus flatness record issued before the plate leaves the shop
- Protective film on the mounting face, foam corner blocks, pallet packing for plates above 400 mm
- Standard lead time 6-10 days for prototypes, 15-22 days for production batches
- Repeat orders reuse the same fixture and program, so flatness results stay identical
- Split deliveries arranged against your build schedule rather than a single shipment
Where It Fits
- Pedestal and floor mounting of collaborative and light industrial arms
- Robot cells mounted on aluminium extrusion frames and linear slides
- AGV and mobile manipulator base interfaces
