Clearance Decides the Edge Before the Press Runs In stamping, the gap between punch and die sets how the material fractures. Too small and the edge shears with a secondary burr and rapid tool wear. Too large and the material tears, leaving a rough edge and a burr that varies along the contour. ...

The Difference Is Support, Not Spindle Speed A conventional lathe holds the part at one end. A Swiss machine holds it in a guide bushing a few millimetres from the tool. Everything else follows from that single difference: deflection, achievable length to diameter ratio, tolerance on small diameters...

The Setup Sheet Is Where Tombstones Fail A four face tombstone with good squareness can still produce scrap if the setup sheet sends the operator to the wrong datum. The fixture is only half the system; the paperwork that tells the machine where the faces are is the other half. One Datum, Then ...

The Symptom and the Usual Diagnosis A vacuum fixture stops holding. The operator checks the gauge, sees it dropping, and the first response is to blame the pump. In most cases the pump is working exactly as specified and the leak is somewhere between the part and the plate, in a place the gauge ...

The Interface Is a Thermal Resistor in Series A cold plate is only as good as the path between the die and the coolant. That path has four resistors in series: die to case, case to thermal interface material, interface material to plate, plate to coolant. Machining only controls the third one ...

Most Prototype Quotes Are Read the Wrong Way Buyers usually compare the bottom line and pick the lowest number. That works for catalog parts and fails for prototypes, because two quotes for the same drawing can differ by a factor of three for reasons that are visible in the line items if you know ...

One Station, One Operation, No Handling A progressive die feeds a coil through a sequence of stations, each performing one operation, until a finished terminal leaves the end of the strip. The part is never handled between operations, so consistency comes from the tool rather than the operator, and ...

The Guide Bushing Is the Process In Swiss type turning the workpiece is held by a guide bushing a few millimetres from the cutting tool, so the tool never pushes against an unsupported length. That single detail is why a 1 mm pin can be turned 40 mm long without bending, while the same part on a ...

Why a Tombstone Beats Four Angle Plates A tombstone turns a horizontal machining center into a multi part machine: four faces carry four sets of parts, the table indexes ninety degrees, and the spindle cuts one face while the operator loads the next. The gain is spindle hours per part, because the ...
